“What are you reading?” and “Tell me all about your new courses.”
From 'The achievement of desire'
The mother asks her son, and he doesn’t respond with any enthusiasm to tell her about school. Personally, I feel it is necessary to keep a daily conversation between parents and children about their lives. Whether the son is asking his mother how work was or the father is asking his daughter how school was, the curiosity is a strong connection in the family’s relationship.

Even if I told them I am reading Keat, they won't understand
To uneducated parents, they would sadly realize that their children talk to them less and less about his life.
It's sad, but it's true. Even if the children tell them what they are reading, or what they are discussing about, or what they are worrying about, they won't understand, they won't be any help. So why bother? especially when I don't have time, energy or mood to explain.
Sad, but true.
