Don’t be shy, speak up! (Yingshan Hu)

“Speaking up may not magically change a biased attitude, but it can change a person’s behavior by putting a strong message across. And the more messages there are, the most likely a person is to change that behavior.”

This quote is from the article “DON’T JUST STAND THERE”.
Actually I think I am a shy girl, when I meet some people first time I see, I usually don’t be shyt know how to talk with them. So I think I need to learn how to speak up. Speak up can change a person’s behavior, don’t be shy, speak up, it would be make you more confident and communicate with somebody become easier. Speak up is a good way to project yourself, if you can do it, I think your behavior already changed.

Please Speak Up~! (Seungbae Lee)

"Speaking up may not magically change a biased attitude, but it can change a person's behavior by putting a strong message across."

This quote is from "Don't just Stand There." by Diane Cole.
I wanted to be talkative and confident about myself. But, I'm still pretty shy. I think one of the reason is not talking and thinking too much. If we talk as much as possible, our behavior can be confident and not get stressed in our mind. That's why speaking up can change a person's behavior.

Don't keep things in too long(Jia Qi Huang)

"If you keep things in too long, things build up and bad things happen."

This is a quote from the article "We get along by not geting along". The writer is hoping the screening is a start to solve the crime problem. I like the quote. If the problem we keep for a long time and do not solve it immediately, some things will build up and bad things will happen. That's a chain-reacting. Just like if I don't do the home work and leave it for a long time, the teacher will make a bad record for me. The bad record will make me get "F" in the final. So, don't keep things in too long, even just a homework. Solven the problem quickly,do not let things build up and bad things happen. That's a truth everyone should know.

Seungho Lee "Don't just stand there."

In the "Don't Just Stand There," there is a quote "Speaking up nay not magically change a biased attitude, but it can change a person's behavior by putting a strong message across." When we meet someone, we can have two situations. When we meet wise people are speaking up. However, in the opposite situation, we ignore easily what the others are spieaking up. Therefore, it is important who is speaking up.

Jokes offensive to me as a woman? a man?

JinHyun Baek
"I don't think you intended this, but I found a number of those jokes offensive to me as a woman."

This is from 'DON'T JUST STAND THERE'

People usually just say something for fun or joking, but the others who is listening to the talking can feel bad. However, they do not say those kind of talking on purpose. Therefor, when we say someting, we should think about what I will say, and how listener will feel.

(Younghee Jeong) take off your lens..

"If your lens is prejudice, you're wearing the wrong prescription" by Carrie Latet

it's easy.. you can just take it off. If you have opinion about someone who is not based on fact, that can be prejudice. "you are wearing the wrong prejudice.." it's not true, it's own your opinion. if you take off your lens which is prejudice, you can know who he is really..

Different, Different! Different? (Liu Yang Xue)

"They go to different schools, dress differently and eat at different restaurants." (We get alone by not get alone)
I chose this quote first because in this sentence the author used 3 "different", which in a technical way makes the readers have a strong feeling when it. The black and the jew did everything differently to make themselves differently from each other. The author seemed quite emphasize the word "different". From this 3 "different", we can figure out that how separated people were from different races at that time. Actually, when I read this sentence, I felt a little bit sorry for them and even a little bit sad.
Why couldn't people just get together? Why couldn't they go to the same school and eat in the same restaurant? Isn't it a good idea that people from different races get together and share their own culture and customs with others? It benefits everybody who participate in it! I really hope that people can unite together so that the world can really be a family full of harmoney! There really not a lot of differences exist! We need really get alone!

We live in here now! (Soo Jin Park)

"I may be pore.
I may be Black.
I may be Ugly.
But, I'm here." from 'the color purple'

I'm so sure that this is the best African-American movie I've ever seen. The film was made by Steven Spielberg in 1985. It was hard to believe that such a nice movie was made 20years ago. This movie could stand comparison with nowadays movies. The movie talk about the racism between african-amerian and the white race people. The movie focus on the relationships between Celie and Nettie, Sofia, and Shug and the movie shows us the process of the finding black women's identity.
I feel so bad for Celie in the movie, when she talk about this quote. She want to live with equality but, it is hard to overcome to her. Now, the world was chaged, I can enjoy this movie 'color purple.'

If you can't forgive, let's forget it (xiaoshu zhu)

“cross over the bridge, there’s a lot of love on the streets.”

I really like this quote. This quote gave me a meaningful picture that if people cross a gloomy bridge, they can all the friendly faces on the street. In the last few days, we always talked about what racism was, who the really victims were when racism happened and what should we do to prevent racism. However, no one can find a real good way to against racism. From the articles we discussed, sometimes I was sad about the people who were treated different, sometimes I was angry with the people who blustered others and sometimes I was worried about something unfair that happened on myself. When I read the article “Don’t just stand there”, the last sentence “cross over the bridge, there’s a lot of love on the street” shocked me a lot. This quote makes me wake up and get out of the struggle. I think it’s also the answer of all the questions we mentioned before. Besides racism, people have a lot of things need them to concern, like family and friends. If we cannot solve the problem, we can just cross it, and then we can see there are a lot of wonderful things waiting for us.

please select your joke

It’s a spirited dinner party……what to say or do.

A wonderful dinner party was destroyed just by a joke, the writer was seriously shocked, no matter now delicious the dinner was, just because of a racist joke. Actually I believe the purpose of saying this joke is to active the atmosphere in stead of embarrassing anyone, but finally it broke someone’s heart in front of the people.
In our daily life, people say some joke in order to make people happy, and we love to be friends with such kind of person. Unfortunately some jokes are always connected with some sensitive topic in terms of gender and racism, at this time, the speaker should notice that what kind of people are the audiences, or your purpose will be totally changed. You should know sometimes a little joke will heart the heart, even he will remember it in his whole life. In public, we not only should pay attention to our own behavior but also we should pay attention to other reaction. We can’t be selfish at any time, because our little behavior and conversation will influence other people.

YunJu Chung "Talking about not talking about race"

"Some years ago, reseachers conducting a study for the Diversity Progect, asked black and white college students about their perceptions of racism on a given campus. White students tended to say there was none, but blacks and Native Americans said it was everywhere."

When I read this sentences, I was interested. Why they have a different way of thinking from each race. Troy Duster put it, "White students see diversity as a potential source od "individual enhancement." while African American students were more likely to see the goal as "institutional change.". Blacks and whites tend to differ in their very definition of racism. Even though we are now in a different world, we are still racial discrimination. Some people don't feel racial equality yet. All men are created equal though. Actually, I think you are all well aware of it. It 's easier said than done, but we have to treat persons with discrimination.

Min Kim

"If you are a racist, I will attack you with the North."
-Lincoln-

I think that human being equallity.but sometimes, it is impossible. I was a baseball palyer, I have never seen a black famous player because of discrimination in the U.S. I hope that it will change this situation.

overcome racism(sungjoon Hong)

"My blackness has been a source of pride, strength, and acd insporation."-Colin Luther Powell-

Despite the racism, he overcome the difficulty and became the first black U.S. secretary of state.
I think we have to learn the passion he had in his mind no matter how difficult it was.

Do you want to live in Brroklyn?-Heekyung.CHO

" After dark, on the warrenlike streets of Broklyn shere I live, I often see women who fear the worst from me." (From BLACK MEN AND PUBLIC SPACE")

When I read this sentence, I feels like i dont want to live in a Brooklyn , because, this sentence gave to me feels scarely. I means that if i was live in Brooklyn , all times at nigh i might be meet some black men really fear the worst. Moreover, If I was meet the black man after dark I also fear the worst from the blackman. So, why they are gave to us feels scarely?I think it might be our feeling and thinking about black men.In the Media, many times they show about vulnerable blackmen's information.for example. rubber, burglars are almost blackmen... things like that.they show a lot of blackman's crucial than others. I think that's why women feels like frightend about black men.

Don't Just Stand There, Mayur Raniya.

"You can't keep people from smoking in their house, but you can ask them not to smoke in your house." , said Arnold Khan, professor of psychology at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia. When i was reading this story "Don't Just Stand There" , the above sentence captured my mind and i felt like this is the step everybody should take before any conflicts happen and one can change the others mind before making any racial acts. To support my point, i would say that in the story, the person who was enjoying the party and was about to leave the party but got angry because of his colleague who made a joke on Jewish people. At that time, that person got very angry because he was jewish and everybody in his office was aware of that but he did not do anything to that person who made the joke. He was thinking if i will say something to this person or not, will not make any difference in his attitude so why bother? In my opinion, i would say that why should we sit quiet if someone is making fun of you and by doing that it will create many problems. Fro example, we won't say anything to that person and that pain will grow more and more if we come across diferent people in that same situation and by that time it may create some psychological problems and sometimes we do such kind of things like murder or take part in terrorist activities, etc. that we are not suppose to do but due to our social environment we lead to such things. So rather than falling in this kind of situation we should speak out loud by putting a strong message across and by doing so, it can change a person's behaviour and the more messages there are, the more likely a person is to change that behaviour .

Get along by not getting along (Avish)

"When you don't talk, misunderstanding beginnings"
This essay is very short, though says many things. This essay is very interesting. When i read this qoute in the essay i realized many thing from this sentences.
If 2 person from different race meets daily at same place like at bus stop, college or some where else, but they dont talk with each other and just watch each other and behave strangely in front of each other, then both of them will create negative image in the mind for each other. After that later on a little fire will take the place of exploison in the relationship between those people from different race. If people from different race continued to avoid each other and don't allow themself to cross the race limit line then racial discrimination will never vanish.

HyunJu Ji: Let's talk

Race is the one topic that's probably even more taboo in polite company than sex.
- Talking about not talking about race

I totally agree with this statement. Even me, myself, hesitate to say loudly about race.
Actually, althought I need a help of writing center for Eng2f I hesitate to bring my writings because of its subject.
I don't know why I am hesitating to show my writing in public even I'm not a racist.
Maybe, I am afraid of considered as a racist.

I have met a gentle man who are African-American. We were talking about each family and he told me " I'm the only person who has a dark black colored skin and culrly hair in my family, they have bright brown color. But it's not bad because I don't need to care about a sunburn". I was so surprised about how he mentioned about those sensetive subject in public. If another person who are not black told about that joke it may occured severe problem even the person is not a racist.

The U.S.A is the biggest multiethnic and multicultural society in the world. It means the U.S.A is a nation made by so many differences. However, people in the U.S.A do not want to talk about their differences. Historically, the U.S.A cannot say 'I'm innocent about racism', however, it is something strange to keep silence about race even someone who are not a rasist. I think problems are came out from that silence. For resolving a certain problem, a conversation is required and for the conversation we should start to say something rather than keeping a silence.

lines in the mind, the earth (YEAJEONG LEE)

" There is no place where land ends and sea begins. "

This sentence from "Lines in the mind", Donella H. Meadows.

If you see the map, you can see a lot of territory between countries and sea. This is from all human. People made lots of lines, territory. Some countries which located nearby sea, they also have territory to sea. That countries do not allow to invade their territory, because they think that is their own one. As this auother mentioned that there is no indication in the earth. If you see the satellite picture of the earth, you cannot find lines. I think these lines are from people's imagination. People cannot divide the earth and think this earth is their own one.

Out of question (Edward Chen)

Asking questions sometimes is much harder than answering questions because to ask questions might make them less smart than others. According to the human ego, no one wants to be the unintellugent person in a group. But "When you don't ask questions, there are misunderstanding."
This is a quite common behavior for people. We usually feel shameful to ask question in front of peers. Even though we don't really understand what the person, who is talking to us, is saying we pretned we know everything what the person in expressing. For instance, in a classroom, when a teacher asks "Do you have any questions so far?" Usually, a few students will raise hand to ask question. At the time, the teacher thinks every students in the classroom has no problem. But does it really mean everyone is satisfied in the class? Therefore, to ask what you don't really understand is the best way to prevent misunderstanding happening, and let you more clear about the situation. Hence, to be brave to let others know what your problem is when you have one.

Did you notice today's "Quotation of the Day" on the right?

Equality may perhaps be a right, but no power on earth can ever turn it into a fact.
Honore de Balzac (1799-1850)

What do you think of this quote?

It seems that Balzac didn't believe there would be any power in this world that could possible realize the real equality. It sounds depressing, but maybe he is definitely right.

If you heard the presidency debate of last night, those comments of the would-be president of the United States, about other countries, such as Afghanastan, Parkistan, Georgia, Russia, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, were more depressing. When understanding is missing, equality will never turn into a fact.

effective people are just effective?(JAKE YOON)

THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

-Stephen R Covey

Do you want to know to being a effective person?
there are 7 habits that make you effective person.

1. Be proactive.
2. Being with the end in mind
3. Put first things first
4. Think win/win
5. Seek first to understand, Then to be understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

This book is thick.. I started to read like two months ago, but i haven't finished yet.
but some day, I will..

the most impressive part was #5. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD. I found one quote from that chapter.

"I feel already happy when I can understand. The rest doesn't matter."

Sometimes I do work or do homework, or do something before I understand. Of course, the result is not good. There are steps before do start something. For example, if you have a assignment to write an essay. Before you start to write an essay, you have to fully understand what essay is about, what is the topic of an essay. If not, you are going to write totally different than what you’re wanted to write.

After you understand what you want to do, what you have to do, you can get a specific information and accurate source. Then you’re going to be happy for it.

So we know what we need to be an effective person. So let’s understand first!

do you wnat to live in Brooklyn?

" After dark, on the warrenlike streets of Broklyn shere I live, I often see women who fear the worst from me." (From BLACK MEN AND PUBLIC SPACE")

When I read this sentence, I feels like i dont want to live in a Brooklyn , because, this sentence gave to me feels scarely. I means that if i was live in Brooklyn , all times at nigh i might be meet some black men really fear the worst. Moreover, If I was meet the black man after dark I also fear the worst from the blackman.

So, why they are gave to us feels scarely?

I think it might be our feeling and thinking about black men.
In the Media, many times they show about vulnerable blackmen's information.
for example. rubber, burglars are almost blackmen... things like that.
they show a lot of blackman's crucial than others. I think that's why women feels like frightend about black men.

Oops oops- Xuexue Pan

Can you imgaine a huge black guy wrondering in the street with whistling?
It's not the skin color's fault. It is the prejudice making people fear something which they shouldn't fear. What makes the author care so much about his color and show off his education background?

what do you need when you learn a different language (JAKE YOON)

what do you think?
when you want to learn a different language, what do you think is the most important ?

"Courage is the quality most essential to understanding the Language of the World"

in THE ALCHEMIST By Paulo Coelho.

when i was reading this book, i thought, this quote is what i need!
because im in the situation that have to learn English, and i know COURAGE is the most essential to learn a different language.

I couldn't finish the book, but it's really interesting book, and also easy to read.

When i m thinking about this quote, it reminds me when i came here first time,,
i was a bit nervous and nota talkative person.

NOW I AM HERE in the United States with a lot of American friends and leran English from them. the answer that i have been changed is COURAGE.

Courgage makes me to be brave and makes me have a lot of American friends.

The Boy in the book, his name is Santiago. he wanted to learn a different language, and he needed courage to learn another language.

All international students on the campus, they will suffer from learning english if they do not have courage to break the wall which stands between you and American culture.

What' s the core?(XIAOJING WU)

I began to take precautions to make myself less threatening. I move about with care, particularly late in the evening. I give a wide berth to nervous people on subway platforms during the wee hours, particularly when I have exchanged business clothes for jeans. If I happen to be entering a building behind some people who appear skittish, I may walk by, letting them clear the lobby before I return, so as not to seem to be following them.

All in all, the writer chose to change some of his behaviors to make himself less threatening, being adapt to the environment.
In my opinion, to live in the world, we should do many things to adapt to the environment. People who are irascible, the may learn to control their sentiments and not to make troubles. But the writer is in a different situation. It is his appearance that makes himself looks threatening. It is because of his height six feet two inches, his broad body and his beard and billowing hair, his appearance black. This is obviously a kind of discrimination. I believed that is not only the writer’s own problem, but also the society. It means that almost the whole society has the same associations when seeing certain kind of people. The writer did not do anything, just looks threatening. He is innocent to be treated as a bad guy, also other black, because these are common episodes.
It is time for us to reflect upon on our attitudes when seeing blacks.

east vs. west (miyako okuda)

"westerners pay attention to the focal object, while asian attend more broadly --- to the overall surroundings and to the relations between the object and field."

this reminded me about this story when japanese people watch a magic trick show, they try to see through the secrets behind the magic tricks. but when american people wacth that kind of show, they just enjoy that as just a show.
those things are interesting to me because geographical background make people think differently and moreover people see a thing differently.

Seungho Lee "Just Walk on By"

In this artivle "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space.", there is a sentence that
"Negro bitterness bore down mainly on other Negroes." We have usually thought that the black people act by bad, wrong, and violence. Sometimes, they are insulted by other races, especially white people. I watched the news that some white cops suppress one black criminal severely. That was an issue. But, an effect presupposes a cause. Some black people pick up a quarrel with my friends and me. For example, on the bus stop, some black female trod on my female friend's foot without reason, And another example, a dozen of black people hit my friend's head on our way. I think that these acts bring about a biased view of black people.

Racial Discrimination (Seungbae Lee)

"women are particularly vulnerable to street violence, and young black males are drastically overrepresented among the perpetrators of that violence."

This quote is from "Black Men and Public Space. At the quote, I was motivated to write some comment.
It's because the quote content is about racial discrimination. These days, people are trying to get over that unfair system. But, I think racial discrimination is still happening in the world, especially U.S. Actually, it is not only black people but also Asian people who is the victim of racial discrimination.
For example, in America, there are so many immigration procedures (including VISA) to Asian visitors and students whereas Europeans who is white people don’t need VISA. Also, there were no black politicians in American history.

Black Men and Public Space. Hyungjun Kim

"At dark, shadowy intersections in Chicago, I could cross in front of the car -black, white, male, or female- hammering down the door locks."

Nowadays, we have many kinds of races and live together in the Earth. Asians, African Americans, white people and Hispanics all of people are same. However, this society has racial discrimination. This is a big social problem. Nobody can discriminate other people. All of people have liability to live without discrimination.

YunJu Chung, "Black men and public space"

"As I swung onto the avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between us. After a few more quick glimpses, she picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest. Within seconds she disappered into a cross street."

Im similarly situated like her weather I have ever experienced. Actually I was scared the black men when I came to New York. When I and my friend went to Harlem, there were many people who were the black men. They kept out of mischief to us. They did if for fun we felt a vague fear. I have made friends a black since now and I stay in touch with them. They are kind people. They just express by words and actions with a joyful look. I become intimate with them.

It is good to be open about things!!!! (Heeyoun Huang)

"I think it is good to be open about things"

the quote from the article "We Get Along by Not Getting Along" had that quote by 16 years old boy, who is Jews. But what he said is that since the jews people don't want the black people to be in their area, they don't want to go there neither.

it's something that american people should be open too. because since america is very diverse, it's kind of weird to be racist in america. Everybody is different, so you can't base the actions of one race to that entire race. so you can't be so close minded;you have to be open minded, open about the things. If you want to be ignorant, just to be ignorant.

you see all the time even you see on the train, like group of loud black people, and you see like old white person, who doesn't know anything about, and the white person started to acting weird, like hiding purse. It's getting better but it's all about the people if they can change or not.
we should try to realized that group of people doesn't represent the entire race. we have to be more open minded, and peoples' acting is because how they grew up.

'judge a book by its cover' . try not to make one person that you see, trying to think that is not the other people like.
to be open minded about things, we should trying to learn more and educate yourself before you talk about thing you don't know.

Black Men And Public Space(Yingshan Hu)

“Women are particularly vulnerable to street violence, and young black males are drastically overrepresented among the perpetrators of that violence.”

This quote is from the article "Black Men And Public Space".Generally, women are effeminate. If let a woman to fight with a man, I think everybody can know the result, except the woman is a strong woman or she knows Kung Fu. So I very agree with this sentence “Women are particularly vulnerable to street violence.”Women have to know how to protect by themselves.
I read news online and newspapers, I found a lot of crimes were happened because of blacks. I know some blacks are poor; they don’t have any good ways to earn money, they across crime to gain something valuable.

Feel free to walking on Harlam.....(Jia Qi Huang)

"she cast back a worried glance. To her, the youngish black man-a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket-seemed menacingly close. After a few more quick glimpses,she..............Within seconds she disappeared into a cross street."
The past August, I was lived in my friend's home. She was living in Harlem. Before that, I never been to Harlem. I didn't know how is that place. For some reasons, I have to went out by myself everyday. When I passed through the street, I saw a lot of black men hang out on street. They seemed nothing to do. At the beginning, to me, they looks just like the writer describe. I always feel some eyes looking at me. Yes, I admit that I had prejudice against them at the beginning. I feel scare when I passed the street. I try to didn't made any eye contact to them. But I change my mind until that thing happend. There were a black men always stand on the street out of my apartment building. He is tall and seemed nothing to do. He would say hi to me every morning when I pass him. At the begining, I did like the quote said, gave him a quick glimpse and passed him more quickly. One side, I felt impolite if i kept ignore him. The other side, I worried he would did something if I answered him. But after a few days, he keep said hi to me every moring, I try to answered him and still passed him quickly. One day morning, he say hi to me as usual, but the same time he walk toward me. I have to stop walking because he was on front of me. I try my best to hide and scare and looking at him. What he did just want to shake hands with me. When he shake hands with me, i saw his smile on the face. The smile is so warm and nice. Suddenly, i don't feel scare any more. Even till now, I don't understand why he said hi to me everyday on the street. Maybe he just want to said hi to people, no matter who.(But i asked my friend, she said she never meet a guy did that for her. Strange, right?! )Maybe they just want to be friendly with other people. All my scary is comes from my prejudice. After that day, i felt free to walking on Harlam, just like walking on any other place in NewYork.

Min Kim

"women are particularly vulnerable to street violence, and young black males are drastically overrepresented among the perpetrators of that violence."

The person is born from the different place. The rich and poor neigborhood are different type of crime. the reason where the crime is many, that want to become a rich man. In the example which defends, The law and education strongly. The world would truly be a better place without crimes.

BLACK MEN ADN PUBLIC SPACE

JinHyun Baek
From the article, there is this sentence "Women are particularly vulnerable to street violence, and young black males are drastically overrpresented among the perpetrators of that violence."

Actually, I agree with it because that kind of criminal is usually happened by black males, and I saw many crime by blacks from news or new papers. In the otehr sight, I think blacks perpetrate because of the ricism. Blacks' criminals can be perpetrated by prejudice and racism so they perpetrate to show their dissatisfactions to a society. I think that if people do not have racial prejudice with blacks, black perpetrators would be decreased.

Talking about not talking about race (Avish)

"Playing the race card"
I disagree with the writer when she says that Political leader are playing with the race card to win more votes.
Because i think if Obama is using such thing then he can't come to this level. To be at this position obama must had also got the support from the white people. And if he has done somthing good then only people can support him. And the same thing is about McCain. They both going to need votes to be the leader from the people from whole nation, so how can they play with the race card, because if they do so then they are not going to get votes from the posite race people.

No need to swallow it

"Cross ove the bridge. There's a lot of love on the streets." said by a teenager at CityKids ( pg 337, paragraph 35 in the Don't just stand there.) I like this sentense very muchand, I think it is good for some inflexible people as well. In my comprehension, this sentense means do not persist in your own opinion, when you give it up and step across the line you set for yourself, the situation will be a lot better. This is hard for adults, I am very impressive to real it which is spoken by a teenager.
In the essay, some people are too timid to speak out their opinion when they hear something offensive. They are afraid that if they speak out, it might bring some bad results or embarrasements to them; hence, they swallw slurs even though it makes them uncomfortable. But in fact that nothing bad is going to cause when you speak out, they will know the way they are acting offers other people a feeling of humiliation. To feel how others feel is the best way to make a joke or treat other people.

racial discrimination (sungjoon Hong)

"women are particularly vulnerable to street violence, and young black males are drastically overrepresented among the perpetrators of that violence."

Racial discrimination exists anywhere. I think it arises from prejudice and misconception. All men are equal. It means people can’t be treated differently according to gender, social class, race and culture. Although these prejudice lessened compared to before, the racism is still serious problem in our society. As globalization becomes our future society, the issue of racial inequality is an inseparable part of our big social problem. This is why we need to think about this problem wholeheartedly. We need to feel and practice a sense of tolerance in order to solve this problem. I think when we understand the difference of others and learn how to cooperate with such differences can this issue of discrimination be tackled with tangible results.

"Long Overdue ", Mayur Raniya

Where is the end of the tangled thread? How will we roll into a ball if we can't find an end?

When i read this quote in the Long Overdue i was impressed by the writer but i was also shocked by that elder woman's behavior who was talking against all the Arabs even though they did nothing to her. She wasn't aware of that the girl who is sitting beside her is an Arab girl and she continued muttering against Arabs. I would say that the lady who was talking all theses nonsense things is still not mature enough and the same goes to people in the world who behave like that lady because i know there are some people who act normally from outside but they still have the color and race differences inside and these things lead the good people into crime activities though they are from good backgrounds. Because these people get mentally depressed when they come across situations. Finally, i would like to say that if we don't find the end of this kind of behavior to others than it will create more and more problems in the future and even if we try to solve those problems by that time period it will be too late for us. So i would like request the people in the world that we should unite together and should lead the world towards success.

(Younghee Jeong) Black men and public space...

"black man-a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of bulky military jacket"
If he was moving toward you, what do you imagin? what do you think he is going to? what do you feel? I think that most people would think that they are afraid of him or he seems like he is going to do something bad. Even though he was just walking toward them or asking something, we have already judged what he would be. I think that prejudice and stereotype can be the thing that kill people.
How mean it is to judge someone because of their appearance.
maybe most people know that and have at least one experience about that.
if we are treated that way, we would feel really bad. then, we say that we should not ignore or judge other because of their looking. However, have you ever ignored someone or treated someone with prejudice that you already have while you are saying that?

Would you run away? (Svetlana)

“To her, the youngish black man- a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing heir, both hands showed into the pockets of a bulky military jacket-seemed menacingly close”.

This phrase from the story of a young guy who had troubles with communication to other people, because of the way he looks. In a beginning of his story he tells us about a young lady who prejudicially thought about him as about a maniac.

I think the writer is prejudiced himself. He didn’t know for sure the reason why the woman “disappeared a cross the street”. In his explanation he concentrated more of an intention on a fact of his skin color, but let’s look at this situation if this man was white. The woman probably would run away as well. Because huge white male with beard and billowing heir doesn’t look less dangerous to a young woman, who is alone on a street. I can tell it from own experience. I would run away as well, doesn’t matter what skin color has a stranger who doesn’t look safe to me. I know it’s not right to judge anyone the way he/ she looks, but in this situation running away is a demonstration of an instinct of self-preservation.

(Yeajeong Lee) Whistle melodies from Beethoven and Vivaldi?

" I whistle melodies from Beethoven and Vivaldi and the more poplular classical composers."

This sentence from the article "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space".

Why he need to this? For what? Because he is a black guy and some people feel afraid when they think black guy just follow them, specially in the night? I know because of a little bit of black people, lots of another people (like white or Asian) think they are afraid people. This preconception make lots of crime. Even black people do not want to behave like bad thing, this social circumstance make them do lots of crime. I think people don't need to have preconceptions about blck people. Don't you think that this situation is funny?

HyunJu Ji : Ask People When You Can’t Understand

“ When you don’t ask questions there are misunderstanding”

Sometimes, we reluctant to ask people with some reasons such as a shyness or a modesty. Ignorances are not guilty, however, it often brings misunderstandings. Then it is transformed unexpected results. Especially, between person to person it become more severe.
Pretending to know even we know anything, that is a problem.
That brings us prejudices, and the hard tanned-sunglasses make us cannot see clearly each other anymore.

In the article “We Get Along by Not Getting Along”, there is an example of a dichotomic logic. There are two groups of people, blacks and jews. They are cautious each other with their own thoughts. A black interviewee said, “Jews think they’re superior.” and a jewish said, “ Most blacks are good, but some of them make trouble.” Well, I think these kind of people exist any society, however, prejudices and misunderstandings brought them wrong thoughts. It is not a fact but just an assumption.

Misunderstandings are less than ignorances. We should to try ask people when we can’t understand. Communication is required for it and we should to realize that somtimes, too much modesty can kill our neighbors.

Far Away From Reaching Harmony (BIN YE)

""In My "Negro Problem--and ours," Podhoretz writes that the hatred he feels for blacks makes itself known to him through a variety""

we cannot deny all of the black males because of some muggers what were black males. In the artical the writer described how was he misunderstanded by others and he cited some instance that some black males suffered discrimination from white people: some black males were injured accidentally by white policemen. They just afraid that the black males were muggers. Actually some black males were victims.
Personally speaking, we cannot discriminate against black males, do people think about the sense of treason? If they suffered discrimination continually, that will result their sense of treason, they will disregard people's minds to do some illegal things. It cause that the world far away from reaching harmony forever. Thus, I think people should obviate the prejudice of black males, be objectively to understand the difference between people. Let our world to be full of harmony.

Our Negro Problem (Yongfei Gu)

Norman Podhoretz in his famed (or infamous) 1963 essay,"My Negro Problem---and Ours,"recalls growing up in terror of black male; they"were tougher than we were, more ruthless,"...
Actually, not only the whites terrify blacks, but also us sometimes.
I admit sometimes I terrify them too. Maybe the color makes me feel uncomfortable or something else, especially in the nighttime. I have a female friend, when she just arrived America, she was to be to be sexually harassed by the blacks. Since then, she becomes as same as the females in the article. She told her American friends (Of course all whites), they just said some cursing words and told her to away from the blacks. What should I say about her Negro Problem? That's a little complex...because sometimes I feel that too.If put you in a group of blacks, what is your feeling?
Definitely, most of them are good guys, they are very glad to help people, they are hard working and optimistic. But there are always some bad guys in a country, here is a rule,if there is a black sheep from a group, after that the group will be very "famous" by the black sheep and people out of the group will think everyone in the group is the same. Obviously, that's not so correct.
Maybe we always talking about the whites treat the blacks as a mugger, but what about us? As I know, most of us have the Nergo Problem too.

Quincy Shen: Do you mind to kill other lives?

"As a softy who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw chicken-let alone hold it to a person's throat- I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once."

This is a quote from "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space."
It is unexceptional to comprehend why a broad six feet two inches black man would feel scare to row chicken. In the same situation, you might feel better if someone else served as a executioner instead of your position at that cruel moment. Because that poor victim's life was taken by that guy but not you although the consequence was the same.
Looking at those small and weak animals gradually forfeit their lives with unceasingly struggles in your secure blood-spattered hands. Maybe some people were feeling abashed or could not undergo that process of killing. Especially facing to those animals who have cute, pitiful or weak appearances, such as rabbits and birds. Besides, other animals like pigs are not lucky enough. When they were killed by people in different ghastly ways; we would feel commiseration or nauseatingly? Just like countless ugly insects. For instance, cockroach. People rack their brains to exterminate them; but the results always unpopularity. People kill cockroach because they encroach on advantages of humans. We kill pigs because they can satisfy our demand.
However, Is it our offense to kill animals? We decide their life and death. God decide which one of them should be killed. And God choose what we will be in next lifetime.

your fear make me in danger (by Xiaoshu Zhu)

“Where fear and weapons meet-and they often do in urban America-there is always the possibility of death.”

Recently, people always talk about something about racism and discrimination. I am confused that who the real victim is when racism happened. The writer, who is a black man, was treated differently by others. He gave us very deep opinion about what black people’s common feelings when they are raced by others. “My first victim……” I was shocked by the first sentence of the article “Black Man and Public Space.” The writer used a kind of irony to show his despair about the reality that he was raced, but he was powerless to change the situation. However, racism seems to be like a kind of disease and it never heals. For racism, white people hurt black people, and black people to hurt back white people for revenge, the relationship of them let me think that who the real victim is and who should to bear the bad result. This is a negative cycle that makes the society developed slowly. From the other side of this situation, did any people ever think of what black people’s feelings are? They also have something they are scared, even though they look strong enough. The injury on spirit is much painful than that on the body. People who always get hurt, they will find ways to protect themselves. Just like the writer said that when people were too feared, we couldn’t image how terrible things they would do. I was shocked by the quote above, I never think that black people are worried about people would hurt them just by fear. Actually, this is unfair for the black people, because they can’t have the normal live as the same as the white people have. Anyway, if people always judge the thing on its surface, they never know how wonderful the world is.

Talking about not talking about race Avish

"Politics and Race"
I feel this essay quite boring and meaningless. Writer gives the title "Talking about not talking about race" to this essay, but i think the title is totally different from the essay because both the title and the essay has different meanings. Before i started reading the essay. As per the title given to the essay, i thought the essay would be of making more racial difference by not talking about race. But when i read this essay, it was totally out of my imagination. Futher more when i read the essay i feeling that there is no connection of title and essay because the writer talks about the politics till the half essay finished and then she starts talking race later on. In the essay she has given couple of examples, but even i didn't get what that examples mean. Even the picture used in the essay is different from the reading materials. Picture also gives the different idea.

Who is the real victim?(Liu Yang Xue)

“Such episodes are not uncommon. Black men trade tales like this all the time.”
I quote these two sentences from two different degrees. First, the author wrote the former sentence using two privative words “not” and “uncommon” which made this sentence become an affirmation sentence. Actually the author could just write the sentence like this: “Such episodes are common”, and it would also make sense. So why did the author still need to do so? Because it will bring an effect which can emphasize the sentence so that it can strengthen the author’s feeling. Yes, it is not uncommon! The author expressed his anger from the words. And this sentence can also be used in our essay which can better show our feelings. The other side is from the content of the essay. The author owned this kind of misunderstanding to episodes. It really shocked us. Because episodes which show on TV means things are dramatic and can hardly happen in our real life, however, things like episodes always happen to the black people. They were always misunderstood. What happened? Why they were always considered as a mugger, a rapist or worse? Is it just because they were black? I could figure out the anger of the writer and at the same time also a little bit frustrated because he couldn’t help. That’s why he wrote down the latter sentence “Black men trade tales like this all the time”. This made me want to ask a question: Who are the real victims at all? Are those who silly thought they were offended by the blacks? The answer is no! Both you and I know that the real victims are those innocent black people. They had been treated unfair for so long time! I hope it will not happen in our today’s life!

Prejudice on some people(Shuhui Wang)

"Women are particularly vulnerable to street violence, and young black males are drastically overrepresented among the perpetrators of that violence."

Obviously, this sentence shows a kind of prejudice on black males. Why young black males must be a criminal? We cannot judge some people based on their appearance. I heard a story which is about a boxer. He is a Mexican and his stature is as big as a boxer. What is more he has a scar on his face. So he always be treated like a bad guy but actually he is a nice man. The scar on his face was because when he wants to save a baby in a firing house, a wood hit his face. Finally, people change their thought to the boxer because of the good things he have done.
I want to say that, if only young black males make more and more contributions to this world, people will change their mind to them. I believe so.

Oops!-Xuexue Pan

"Long,long,long overdue."

Yes! It's true. It's really long overdue.

I feel so tired of talking on racial issue. From ENG_1F to ENG_2F, almost every artical is on racial issues. Sometimes I just doubt if they can write somethhing else? Perfume spreys every 5 mintes makes people feel dizzy. However, reading this kind of articles makes me throw up, especially I am the one who had ever suffered from racial issues.

It was a great beautiful weekend. I went shopping with my friend in SOHO and a decent-dressed man passed by, pushing a babycar. Suddenly he got mad on me and shuted
"Excuse me! Don't you see the babygirl?! Can't you get an other way?!"
He was too angry to sacred me.
I was shock.
And another old lady who saw the whole things came to comfort me,
"Oh my god. That for a girl..."
Now, I alredy try my best to forget this experience. But everyweek when I read the articles I still feel uncomfoetable and sad.

Whenever I read about the racial topic I can't help gossiping, "Oops!Dame it!"
Could somebody please think about the readers?
Can we expect something happy?

Rome was not Built in a Day

“Like the slow walk of certain species of trees from the flatlands up into the mountains.”

I was impressed with this quote, which is also can be connected with my personal thought. In this article, a slow walk of tree mean that it is still a long time before people change the judgments and prejudice, especially for the problem of races. People always have some incorrect thought on black people, which let black people feel unfair and anxious. No matter what they did in success, people still have the prejudice on them. In my point of view, most of the prejudice comes from and began with the history. People always judge something connecting with the history. But no matter how serious it is, we still should possess with hope. It is true that changing the thought that has been a long time needs a long time, also many other things need a long time to be formed in terms of personality and characteristic. From we are young; we are influenced not only by our parents’ education, but also by the surrounding environment. With the development of our thought, it is possible that a little behavior will become one part of our personality. Moreover, the impression that you leave on others’ mind also needs a process, we can’t judge a person from his appearance. Only after we get along and know more from them, then we can get the accurate impression from others. Only judging people is from one little aspect is narrow and subjectively.

Long overdue-Avish

" What to say in response"
Its quite interesting eassy, because of the examples given in. The thing in eassy i notice is author has describe his points and ideas, with the example. Author first gives the examples and then he starts explaining the point and ideas. Due to which readers gets the image of the points which he is going to make futher in eassy. Another thing is many time in the eassy author has used such words thats explain too much thing which author wants to say. Such few words express the whole image of the situation. For instance when author says about the women who is talking about Ben kingsley and in between she starts using irritating words for the Arabs people. At that time whatever author was feeling, She just express in few words that is "My blood froze". This gives the whole idea that author was feeling at that time.

prejudice makes racism. -Heekyung cho.

" So, I grew up in a basically racist household with more than a child's share of contempt for white people."
(sentence from " A slow walk of trees.")
when I first read this sentence, I feel a lot of things about house education.
And moreover, I am really pleasured to author, because when he was growing in his own house, he think a lot of things about white people. Father does distrusted every word and every gesture of every white man. on the other hand, his mother believed most white people's theories.
On that times, He might be really confused about white people's attitude. But now, he was got over the a lot of views about white people.
If I was him, I will getting a lot of prejudices about white people.
A lot of people have different views about the other race. Moreover, many people have prejudice on that things. I think it is worst than the other thinking about race.
If people dose not experienced about the other races, people have not to decision about their race's characteristics. It might be made a prejudice.
Prejudice is lead to racism. So, we have to overcome the prejudice about the other races.

(Younghee Jeong) I pray your heart grows larger someday...

"I pray your heart grows larger someday"

I like this quote which is from "Long overdue" because this is what I am thinking about many times. so when I read this, I felt sympathy toward this quote.
when we are talking to others or getting know about them, we have to understand them. it seems like an easy way, but it's not that easy I think. we have different thoughts, feelings and opinions so we can not just accept or understand them. However, if we open our heart and try to understand them it is not that hard.
sometimes I think my heart grow larger when I think that I lack of understanding for others. while I am reading "long overdue" now I am thinking that I pray everybody heart grows larger so they understand each other all the time. Then, there wouldn't be discrimination at all....

we still have racism to other ppl (JAKE-JINHOYOON)

"So will my page be colored that i write?"

this is quote from THEME FOR ENGLISH B.

Actually i read again when i wrote a quote. this is ridiculous becuase we still have racism to other people. i have many black friends, and i've never look them down or speak bad way to them, because i respect them. color doesn't mean their status.

"So will my page be colored that i write?" when i read this part. i dont' know what i have to say to my black friends. just because he is a black guy and the letter what he wrote would be colored? obviously, when he wrote this part, his heart was probably beating because of sadness.

More sad thing is that it really happenes around me. i stay on campus and i have black friends and white friends. when i hang out with white friends, sometimes they look down black people, or they say i don't like black people to me. i think because of their reaction, black people have bad emotion to white people.

i have searched about Langston Huges a bit. he was a poet, novelist, playwrite, short story writer. and also he is a GOOD LOOKING GUY! he is smart and has many friends. and he wrote extremely good poem. for this kind of person. we have to look up to it, not look down to it.

OUR FIRST CHAPTER TOPIC IS "ARE WE DIFFERENT?" THIS IS A GOOD START. WE CAN LEARN ABOUT A LOT OF ISSUES ABOUT RACISM.

Fight with Violent Act (Chongchong Que)

"EVERY VIOLENT ACT SETS US BACK. SETS US BACK. Say it louder"

The opinion of writer is right: Every violent act sets us back. However, why some country did not stop using act of war to attain benefit yet. Why Bin Laden made the 911 tragedy? Is he the king of the terrorism?

I think the essential problem is appetency. In our life, we have many "wars" in everywhere. People with people, group with gorup, company with company, country with country. In all ages, it did not stop yet. How will be in the future? Nobody knows.

The oli conjuncture, America must gained the whole behoof, however how many people wake up to the inbeing. I saw many pictures on the Int, the war set Irap back about 15 years least. School, hospital, factory were destroyed.

When violent act will be stopped? My answer is never.

Face the discrimination and prejudice from the society! (Soo Jin Park)

" yet a part of me, as I am a part of you." from "Theme for English B"

Due to globalization, lots of people's thoughts are getting change that all of the countries are the one. In the past, there is a strong racism. Now people think like that was unfair because people can understand each life style, culture and they respect each other.
The author insists that unreasonable racism in this poem. This quote means difficulty to change their prejudice. Although hughes talks about the racism between Black and white. However, it is not the whole things in this problem. Actually, there is still racism. in the world. I think it is also eastern-western issue. It is hard to solve, even if the world has changed positively.

Seungho Lee "Think of something you said...."

"Think of something you said. Now write you wish you had said."

It is a quote from the "Long Overdue".

I am frequently thinking of something what i said. Especially, the something is usually my future. From my adolescence, I have carefully considered what to do in my life. I was thinking what aptitude I have, and what part I like. And, I reached what I wish what I want to be. Moreover, I wrote I wish I had thought and said.

However, I think that I have not done like what I said and wrote. Sometimes, people are weak of purpose. So, I want to add one sentence to the quote.

"Think of something(or future) you said. And then write what you wish you had said.

Now do put into action what you thought, said, and wrote."

Thinking More and More!!! (Bin Ye)

"long, long, long overdue" This sentence was said by a gardener at the first of article. At first I can't understand what does the writer means. Why did she describle the gardener?

Actually it is just a metaphor in the article. No matter how bedraggled of the tree and the died flowers in the garden. The gardener still can replay it and even do it better. But how is the overdue problem of racialism? Who can replay it? Who can do it better?

So in my opinion, we should think more and more about the problem of racialism before it became a overdue problem. Be personally, at first the government should handle the issue of the residence of people that contain the nonnative peoles and the foreigner, and the government must treat them equally. Actually, the most important thing is natives. Whether the natives and foreigner can get along well? Whether the natives have the race racialism. But we can do it regarding this issue. For example, now I am as a international student studying in America. Almost the racialism doesn't exist in my life, but it can not be unavoidable. Therefore, when I met this situation I will communicate with them and explain the difference just because of culture till they can understand my opinion and my behavior.
Maybe one people can change nothing. However, if all of the people on campus, all of the people in America and all of the people in the world do it well, it can change anything.
We should think more and more, do more and more!

Min Kim

The U.S does as the multiracial nation. The hight society of the U.S is the white society. Our school sees and white the white black the black oriental the oriental play something. I personaly think that the nationalism contiuosly will be maintained. whisiful thinking, The people around world lives in opulence all and is happy.

A quote from“Long Overdue”(Yingshan Hu)

“I am always thinking of the times I said nothing.”

This quote is from “Long Overdue”. We need to communicate with other people every day, we must contact with other people. Especially I am the international student, English is not my mother language, so I must learn more and speak a lot to improve my English level. Even though I came here already one year, my English is better than before, but I think still not enough. Sometimes I talk with some people in English, I don’t know how to express myself, I think many times and also cannot remember anything. I try to use another way to express myself, sometimes I can do it, but sometimes I also cannot say anything. But it doesn’t matter, I will try more and I believe speak more and more it would be better, I never give up and I can do it.
Communicate is a good way to contact with people. You speak more and more and your English will become better. Thinking about and Organize you idea to make sentences, say what you want to say.

Theme for English B(Yongfei Gu)

"Well,I like to eat, sleep, drink, and be in love.
I like to work, read, learn, and understand life.
...
I guess being colored doesn't make me NOT like the same things other folks like who are other races."

Racialism is a complicated problem in America for quite a long time.People in America prefer to accord differing social and treatment based on skin color. The black people can not do the same thing as well as the white people. The author wrote those sentences to represent that they are human beings though they are blacks. They should have the same treatment, they should have the same opportunities and they should get the same respects. The society couldn't seprate them from the skin color, both of the blacks and the whites are loving their lives;they are supposed to have the same hobbies and the same wisdom, they can do the same job as well as others.

Talk and talk! (Seungbae Lee)

"Leave unspoken. People will talk and talk while the almond tree is blooming."

This quote is from the article "Long Overdue." I was interested in this sentence.
Yes, people need to talk and interact with many others. Starting from gossiping,
we can exchange information or opinion with each other by discussion.
And also, by talking and expressing ourselves and our own opinion, we can be self-confident. Other people are really talking, listening, interacting when we are not doing. If so, extremely speaking, we are going to be silly.

From now on,I'm gonna be unspoken before my language skill is getting worse and self-distrust.

sungjoon.Hong "prejudice and misconception"

While living in the world, we conflict with another culture. Many people often judge another person by their subjective individual interpretation which might be contain prejudice and misconception. people have to understand and accept other cultures. We must think creatively and open our eyes with various angles.

JinHyun Baek "Long overdue"

From the 'Long overdue" I read a quote "But I am always thing of the times I said nothing."

I think pretty many people agree with this quote, and I also have thought the quote, becaue so many times, I have regretted to do not have talking with new people especially foreigners to me. They look different and use different language so I feel different from them. I hesitate to talk to the foreigners, and after all I always regret about that. Therefore. I need to be barve to have talking with new people who are especially foreigners.

To do or not to( XIAOJING WU)

I was ashamed for my silence….I will never fell better about it.

During the days that I spent here in the U.S., I am always in an awkward position. Known me is a Chinese, some people would ask me something about Tibet or Taiwan. This is a very sensitive political topic. I can only present the standpoint which a Chinese should hold. At the same time, they would list several instances to conflict with mine. Because of my poor English, I do not know how to explain or persuade them, did not say too much. I blamed myself, can not forgive myself from keeping silence.
Discrimination is caused by misunderstanding. What I want to say is that we should not judge things before really understand them or knowing only a part of them. Know it doesn’t mean understand it.

Speak up !!! (Yeajeong Lee)

" But i am always thinking of the times i said nothing."

This is a quote from "Long overdue".
I think when some of people meet someone at the first time, they do not say their opinion, very clearly. Maybe, they are shy? or hard to speak up in front of new people.
When i meet new people, i also feel little bit hard, so sometimes i do not speak up, well.
But, as you know, every people have different thinking and behavior.
If you do not say anything in front of people, they never know what you think.
When we have a group works, all of group member should show their opinion to another group member. The writer said, she always thinkg of the times but she said nothing. At that time, other people never know what she thought. Speak your opinion in front of other people. You do not need to afraid to show your thinking. If you say something during talking, it will be good chance to know each other well.

YunJu Chung, "Long Overdue"

"Think of something you said. Now write what you wish had said." Most foreign students feel sympathy this sentence like me. Since we came from different countries, it is hard to be fully expressed in words. It is difficult to decide how to act and speak to people. Even after I am comfortable in the new culture, I still need to do more thinking if others look displeased. Therefore It is easy to be misunderstood. I make an effort though. Once foreign students write to handle this language problem, living in a new place becomes easier.

Say what you want to say (Jia Qi Huang)

" i was ashamed for my silence and carried that ashame across oceans, through a summer when it never rained, in my secret pocket, till now. i will never feel better about it."

this is a quote from the article "Long Overdue". We are in contact with many people everyday, lots of misunderstanding will happen if the communication were not good. How to avoid these misunderstandings? Say what you want to say. Someone thought "just let it go" when they face to some unfair things or misunderstandings. But I don't think so. I don't think keep silence is a good way to avoid the arguement. The best way to solve the misunderstandings is say what you wanted to say. Don't keep silence. Say it with your powerful reasons and do not feel embarrass. Otherwise, we will like the writer said:regret keeping word in secret pocket and never feel better about it.
I remember the first time I came to NewYork JFK airport, when I waitting for a long line to check out, a guy jump the queue in front of me, the security guard thought I was together with the guy, and warned us. I tried to explain but the security guard did't listen, i keep silence finally. But I feel regret about that till now, because i really did't do that in an international airport.i should said something, but i didn't. I feel so bad about that till now....

Never set us back! (Shuhui Wang)

"EVERY VIOLENT ACT SETS US BACK. SETS US BACK. Say it louder"

I agree with the writer. There are so many unfair things and discrimination in the world, what will the world be if every victim use violent to fight back.
Violent can not help those victim root and branch. Violent will SET THEM BACK by contraries. Take Bin Laden for example, he use terrorism to fight back, but he have not get what he want, what he did set Middle East people back. What he did put Arab people all around the world in a worse situation .
That is why I agree with the writer --- do not use violent. In my opinion, we can use communication to solve problems.

Quincy Shen:Passing Those Choices

"I am always thinking of the times I said nothing."
This is a quote from a famous article"Long Overdue". It represents a common phenomenon exist in our daily life using straightforward words. And it really affect me a lot.
Some fathomless, grotesque caves come into your tender twinkly eyes simultaneously. To stand still and wait, dithering about how to pass the exclusive life way hereafter. Retrospect to the incessant crossroads we arduous tided over; unfortunately, the wrong choices we have made previously guided us to an unfamiliar turning point. Disorientation, misgivings and expectations occupied in our mind immediately. The tears we dropped flowed into our throbbing hearts to teach us to discriminate between right and wrong; the bygones we deliberated constantly ripened us into maturity. Those simple hearted and tender eyes become emotionless and overcast. So human beings actually did not particularly care about the decisions they made before unless the consequences lead an irretrievable offense. Just like those caves would concretely take you to an impasse which means a place has no outlets. In another hand, some caves barely can be seemed as circle rounds which cannot procure serious consequences.
In your dreamland, you saw an old man walked alone and helpless, stretching out his gaunt dirty arms and expected your negligible alms giving. Fastening your look upon his muddy eyes, you put one coin into his trembling hands and showed all your respects. In fact, you gave nothing to him that sorrowful day, just looking his weak body stand a gust of wind. You may doubted that why you dreamed about it; that means, you actually regretful at that moment. After award cannot offer you another chance; it was just an small interlude in your life. No matter what you will do in the same situation; you cannot give him a fate. Those choices you made can only influenced your fate. Consequently, that is fate. That is the long, long overdue!

For Whom the Bell Tolls, Mayur Raniya

No man is an island, entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind.

I like this quote very much because it speaks about the commonality of mankind. The quote expresses that every person is a part of greater whole. A continent is made up of different terrains such as mountains, plains, forests and rivers which represents the diversity of mankind. Each one of us is interconnected with one another so much so that the death of anyone will diminish a part of our own soul because we will no longer be able to explore that person's experience and wisdom. For example, I try to learn and grow from each person I meet on a daily basis. I personally enjoy the fact that we are all unique and different. The reason being is that dissimilarities bring new experiences, knowledge and insight. I would love to keep everyone i know in my life. However, there are too many people in the world for me to meet in only one lifetime. With that being said, I feel like I lose the opportunity to grow as a person when someone passes, whether or not I actually met them.

heekyung.cho-I know a little more what it feels!

"Now you know a little more what it feels like to be black."I laughed out loud, when I read this sentences. becuase i have really similiar situations.when i was young i lived in Italy.on that times, In Europe has a lot of racisims. such as Asian, black, etc..During that times, i went to hamburger shop in the city.I bought the hamburger . after than, some Italian throw the coke to me!that was really frightned situations. I wet all of my clothes. on that times, some the other Asian person said i had a lot of times such as you .so, when i read this sentences, I really agree with black people sayingthis sentence comes from Essay : long overdue" I think this sentence is clear matching with sentence about long overdue's real meaning.racisim has been long times. So, we have to shout a loud about nondiscrimination all over the world. we are all same!

We are the world

In the past a few decades, robbering, stealing, murdering and other kinds of bad behaviors were done by black, even though some of them were innocent. However, after 911, the people from Middle East have been treated as terrorists. Is it an accurate perspective? Can we determine people by their races?

I laughed out loud when I read "Now you know a little more what it feels like to be a black." (In the article "Long Overdue") It is so funny to hear it from a black. But when I stopped laughing, I thought about this sentense seriously and asked myself "Why do people always use stereotypes on others here in America?" I still don't have the answer. Yet nowadays, everyone has the right to have education, maybe some of the black are more educated, or more disciplinary than we are; therefore, next time when you meet people who are in different races, knowing them before using stereotype on them. i am convenced that you will have different thought of them. Human beings are the same creatures on the earth, we are supposed to be treated equally. We are the world because we are on the same world.

HyunJu Ji : Do you want to be a Viking?

"He is large and blond as a Viking. He wears no shirt".

In the first story, the gardener has a role to rouse up all the painful stories that the author has experienced.
Did he say something about racism?
No, he just said “Long Overdue” to her garden.
However, it was enough to call out heartrending experiences to the writer.

"He is large and blond as a Viking. He wears no shirt".
There are many words to explain a large and blond man.
Of all words, why the writer, who is a half Arab woman, took out a "Viking"?
I felt a barbarism and atrocity from this word.
Maybe, she has suffered from lots of barbaric treatments that we never imagine.
Also, she might think all discriminers as a barbarian.
Discriminative treatments, contempts and prejudices.. these are weapons of "Viking".
I think, all discrimination is originated from an ignorance.
Efforts to understand each other, that will be an answer to solve the discrimination problem. Also, it will lead all “Vikings” to be a civilization.

Fight or let it go? (by Xiaoshu Zhu)

"My father would say, people like that can't be embarrassed."

In the "long overdue", discrimination suffered her a lot. She was mortified about she didn't say anything back to the anthropologist who had bias about Arab. If she said something, she may change that woman's mind. However, her father said that no matter what she said, that cloudn’t changes anything. In my opinion, I stand for her father's idea. Any extreme thing is not created within a short time. Also, people's thoughts come out for many reasons, and they are hard to break.

I remember that once I saw a piece of news which was about a ex-Canadian diplomatist, he said "Canada don’t need Chinese because that only thirty hundred thousand of Chinese have the ability to buy things, and the rest of them even can’t afford for a bottle of coca." When I saw this, I was a little angry, a little astonishing, and the most was disappointed. Such a high position leader, he must be a well educated person, but he could say something so ignorantly. I want to tell him that China is not like what he imaged, and people always need each other not only we have economic relationship, but also we all share one planet. However, I felt that I was very powerless; the things only I can do just kept silence and continued to do my homework…. Finally, helping each other is always better than slander. Depending on each other is rather than helpless.

Then here should be no fight at all…

Jing: "I was shamed for my silence"

oh I was shamed for my silence and i have carried that shame across oceans, ................I will never feel better about it. Like my reckless angry lst words to the one who took his own life.

After the elder woman's severe judgement, She was shocked seriously which lead to the vocal paralysis. But the resoult can not be changed even how regret she was which reflected the main idea of the " long overdue" . To my opinion, many misunderstanding was formed not only by the person who gave the subjective opinion , Sometimes the misunderstanding also could come from the incorrect silence. It could be understood that a person has his own opinion after different kinds of information resource and personal experience which is not objective. But most of people would be willing to listen to other's sound. the problem is that if you feel the opposite point of view which is incorrect, what you should do is to explain the truth and tell them the real world.

This kind of problem will not only appear in the culture problem but also appear in the current socity, when we are the employees in a company, don't be afraid to express your fantastic idea, the whole society need the surprising reaction. Although with the develpment of the globalization of the world, people have more interaction with each other from the five continents which will shorten the national boundaries. And I believe that the incorrect discrimination will be reduced throught the tight communication. The best way to approach is to share and express your opinion. When I come to america, the first impression from my roomate to china is only ancient that was really impressed, but now she knew a lot from me about china in terms of morden and technoligic. If you don't stand up and open you throat, the "long overdue will exist forever.

Comment on "Long Overdue" essay (svetlana)

“But I am always thinking of the times I said nothing.” This quote is clearly reflects the main idea if the “Long Overdue” essay. I think the situations which were described in the essay unfortunately are a very common in today’s life. Often people can’t express their own opinion for number of reasons. They might be too shy to speak out or are afraid of causing a conflict. The main character of the essay could not start the arguments because he was afraid he would not be able to express his own thoughts out loud on polite way. Otherwise thenegative emotions which people hold inside themselves can not only cause mental problems but also cause problems in society. For example situations described in the essay can easily become reasons for the growth of ethnical conflict.

Jing Zhou: The Development of the" Butterfly Effect'

Several years ago i was shocked by the theory of the " butterfly effect" there is hypothesis that if a butterfly waves its wings, it will cause the horrible earthquake in Asia.Butterfly effect means: in the system of power, a tiny change can cause the big chain reaction of the whole system. It seems like impossible from viewing the little elment, but if you synthesis every possible elements , then trying to make a complicated mathematical equality in the professional way. Then you will believe it and think about its horrible consequence in the end.

the american film " butterfly effect" is just a development of the theory, The theory was developed into the real world, a boy's whole growing process was recorded, the film talks about the big influence of childhood will cause the big consequence when he grows up, even a little behavior will be the reason of making mistake when growing up. even though you are still young, the things those you do will become a behavior throughout your whole life time . Personality is a thing that can't be easily changed, so why not be careful about your behavior when you are still young, when you are still a little tree that can be watered .

Jeanie: Simple point of view from the essay `Long Overdue`

(first of all my quotation key does not work. I will use `` instead.)

`Think of something you said Now write what you wish you had said.`

This quote used in the essay `Long Overdue` by writer`s favorite poet. According to the essay, she mentioned this quote before she started to talk about her stories. Her purpose of saying this quote is that she wanted readers to understand how long she been thinking about her experiences being half Arab woman. And finally she wrote it!

According to the quote and the sentence after (But I am always thinkging of the times I said nothing), writer is telling us that never spoke out loud what she always thinking.
From my experience, I think it is better to speak out loud IF, somebody treat you as different because of color, nationality, age or gender. Because as you see the writer was keeping her anger and she is still pretty upset about it.
I would like talk more about this later on, because I have a lot of things to say. But for my next `official` essay, I will keep my self quiet and talk more about it later.

p.s; I would love to get some feedback about what I said ! :)

A Quote From "Long Overdue"

"But I am always thinking of times I said nothing"
This sentence comes from "Long Overdue". The sentence is so-called a transition in the article. Before the sentence, the author was just telling a story as an example to make the introduction of the whole writing. However after this sentence apears, it really leads to what the author want to tell us. She said that she is always thinking about what she didn't say. What happened? It made us want to read further. Then Nye talked about the embarassing situation where the Arabs met by her own experience. We can figure out that even though it is just a simple sentence, it makes the structure of the essay really clear. At the same time, it also makes the reader to think about the problem about Arabs she mentioned in the essay.

Another Quote from "Theme for English B"

"So will my page be colored that I write"
This sentence coming from "Theme for English B" reminds me another quote from Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice":

SHYLOCK: I am a Jew.
Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by John Donne

Reading "Theme of English B", espeically the sentence, " I am part of you", reminds me the epilogue of Ernest Hemingway's novel, "For Whom the Bell Tolls", which actually came from John Donne's poem:

No man is an island, entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were,
As well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know
For whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.
