What is Writing ? (Anthimos Michael)

Writing is a way to communicate with each other. When you write, you put your ideas together more carefully than speaking. Because when you speak the ideas in your head is sometimes scrabbled and confusing to express. In contrast when you write, you can focus on what you are trying to say and provide a better answer to the question that you are asked. For me I find writing to be the best way to express my feelings and ideas. From high school when I started to write some small English essays and now in college where I write bigger essays; I found that, the difficulty level change was immerse. I was shocked when I got my first ENG 1F essay corrected, and saw that I had many problems with punctuation and structure. Things that in high school were never corrected by my teachers and therefore I didn’t learn them. I felt a kind of anger for my high school teachers of not correcting my mistakes. I tried to improve my writing to a more academic level. I know I have improved my skills but I know I still have a long way to go.

Through the courses that I take, sometimes when a Professor asks a question and I might know the answer, I don’t answer the question because am afraid of spelling mistakes. However when the question is asked on a paper, I find it easier to answer the question through writing. Writing makes me feel confident about myself. Sometimes international students have to translate English to their first language and vice versa. This makes them look as slow minded and therefore be misjudged. But through writing you can prove them wrong.

Writing is very efficient way to communicate. A very popular quote said by Edward Bulwer underlines the significance of writing. “The pen is mightier than the sword.” The quote meaning is that written material is sometimes more influential than fighting.

Writing is the way to express your opinions about every subject. It’s also a more formal way to communicate with each other if written correctly. For instance, a telephone call to my Professor would be less informal than writing a good e-mail. Also I can’t remember how many times I had to express my feelings through writing as if some things are meant to be expressed through writing.

Sometimes reading other people writings is an awesome experience. Trying to find out how they think and what they mean on every word, it’s a thrill! Because sometimes one word can mean so many things.

I hope that I will continue to write next semester, so I can improve more my writing skills. Writing for me is the way to show other people how I think. Through my experience through ENG1F and ENG2F I developed the necessary skills to write better essays for future projects. Skills like researching databases, citation and not to plagiarize are only some of them. Hopefully i will increase my skills, and provide better essays in the future. Also writing is my way to prove to professors my true strengths about the courses.

Women's Rights- Women Labor Force (Anthimos Michael)

In the the early 1900's women were still consider as inferior to men. During World War I and World War II as most men fought for their countries, more labor force was required. Said that. women found the opportunity to work and prove that they were equal to men. Also the increasing cost per household required both men and women to work to get more income. Major improvements have been made since then, and women are treated equal to men. This came after women demanded their rights, and through feminist groups. The great progression of technology now requires mothers to spend less time home and more time at work. Also the stereotype that women should do most of the work at home is being reduced, as men and women share house work. But after all these, even though it's said that women are equal to men in the benefits from work, there are still inequality between the two genders.

The Achievment of Desire. (Anthimos Michael)

From a part of the book " The Achievment of Desire." the book tells a story about the writers life through his childhood until he became an adult. Living in a poor working spanish family, he describes the problems tgat he faced doing what he loved, going to school and studying. He found out that education is a bad thing besides all the advantages that it gives. He lost the connection and respect for his family. As a child he loved studying, but it was hard for him to study at home. His parentes were not educated and were too noisy in the house. When he asked his father for a math problem, and seeing his father couldn't help him he took the book and told him that he will figure it out by himself loosing every respect for his father knowledge. Therefore he got the idea that he knew more than his parents and never asked them for help. He was ashamed for his parents and was wishing that he had parents lke the teachers in school. Those were educated. He tried to do whatever the teachers were saying and eventually he became an excellent student winning mant awards. But his disrespect for his parents remained. His mother was positive about education and push him but his father was not. He though that the education was not that good. Only when he graduated from college he realized his mistake and what he lost. The love of the family and even know on a question of his mother he looked down on them answering in a way they could understand. This concluded his idea why education is bad because it takes away the time with family and friends.
In my opinion, even though education is taking time from me and my other activities in the long run it will be beneficial for me. So i don't see why education is bad. In addition i might lost some time from my family but its not something that they are against. Also what comes in mind is that too much of one thing always have some bad effects and in a way the writer was studying too much so the bad effects was to loose his family time.

Reality TV: Surprising throwback to the past ?(Anthimos Michael)

The article "Reality TV: Surprising throwback to the past ?" talks about a reality show called "Cubid" and the similarities to some 19th century books. The show lets a 25 year old woman to marry a man , which viewers of the TV program choose, and if they stay married for a year they will receive $1 million dollars. Critics found this show a disgrace for the marriage, as obviously some may go only for the money, and in general a decline in the American morals. But this intentions for marriage is not a product from the TV show, they also existed in the past. Similar stories are found in the book: Pride and Prejudice where a man with high income was more attractable than others. Also in Emma the man marring the woman is more interested in money than in love. Also a key role of picking a potential groom, were the first impression that it gave to her friends. The friends will judge if the man is good for her friend by is appearance and clothing, which is the same as it was then in the 19th century. These morals existed and remain through the years and that is the reason the writer noted surprising throwback to the past, because these shows instead of moving the American morals forward they are doing the opposite.

Why America Has To Be Fat (Anthimos Michael)

The article "Why America hats to be fat" is about the increased population of America that are fat, about 60%, and what causes this. Obesity in America is becoming the first society killer. As technological improvements greatly rose after World War II in the food industries, the companies have found ways to allure the consumers to buy and consume their products. As these companies constantly produce what people need, and improve the efficiency of their products. People tend to eat more calories that they burn, making them overweight.
As people learn to spend their free tune watching TV or other activities that don't include exercise in them, they don't burn the calories they eat. No one wants to spend his leisure time exercising and at work few things demand physical activity. People in the 1950's had jobs that demanded more physical activity making them thinner than people today.
The food companies make million of dollars producing these fast foods as people tend to not cook anymore, therefore these products are ideal for Americans. The role of women also played a significant role as women now work the same hours as men and do not have the time to cook 2 hour meals. The economy of America needs the Americans to be fat, the food companies make money out of it. Also people promising fat people that by buying their books, guides and visiting the gym will make them thin again make money also. Its a process that these people take advantage of the fast paced life we live today. Therefore is the title of the article "Why America has to be fat".

On My Road (Anthimos Michael)

The article on my road, tells a story about a person who goes on a bus trip to meet his friend at Texas. His friend usually broke into houses and after he was caught by the police, he moved to Texas. Living in Boston in 1964 and desperate to meet his friend, he bought a bus ticket for 100 dollars and he left Boston to meet his friend. After being on the bus traveling he was surprised to see how different the people were are, than the people he knew. The author living in the conveniences of the city, where the middle class and rich people live, was surprised see how poor people live and act. Usually poor and lower class people take the bus, and this unfamiliar behavior of these people was something new to the author. Although he studied in school many different races, for instance African Americans, the feeling of living with them and seeing them through his journey change his mind of what he thought about them. The media was presenting the African Americans often cartoonish and mean, which it turn out to be false. Only when you live someone you can tell his true behavior. Traveling through the cities of America he got to know America better and see the people from a different prospective.
