The article"On my road" by Holland Cotter is mainly talking about the trip. However, that is not hte author's main purpose.
The author start to on his road because of the influence from books and novels, such as Kenouac's "On the Roal". The author try to find his own road in this journal.
The time is 1960s, when "something was wrong in the country since Kennedy's assassination". The author didn't say what the thing is directly, but from the whole essay, is about the racism.
As Cotter 's word, we should know that he used live in the envionment htat with a little of colcored people . He didn't know or understand the truth of the society in America htat time because his informations about the world and the country were mainly from books and lectures.
But this trip became a good lesson fro his to know his homeland more clear. Yes, he used do not know so much. As the word says: America, which had felt like a foreign place seen from bus windows a few months before, booked familiar, smaller.
The word "color lines" appears in many places in the essay. Money and races made people different, that is what litter want to say. For example, the people who in the same bus with him, almost African-Americans who are much more poor than whith. Evven now, there's still a long way for America toreach justice, fair and freedom.
