"The Achievement of Desire" (WooHyun Kim)
Richard Rodriguez's article talks about the alienation from his family his education brought him. He describes how in his childhood he was a 'scholarship student', a term to describe children who come from working class backgrounds but excel in the classroom. These children tend to have to live two lives, one at home where they start to grow apart from their parents as they surpass them intellectually, and one at school where they cling to the teacher for encouragement and guidance. The family divide that forms serves as a motivation to succeed, but also an emotional pain that carries on to college and beyond.
