YunJu Chung "Talking about not talking about race"

"Some years ago, reseachers conducting a study for the Diversity Progect, asked black and white college students about their perceptions of racism on a given campus. White students tended to say there was none, but blacks and Native Americans said it was everywhere."

When I read this sentences, I was interested. Why they have a different way of thinking from each race. Troy Duster put it, "White students see diversity as a potential source od "individual enhancement." while African American students were more likely to see the goal as "institutional change.". Blacks and whites tend to differ in their very definition of racism. Even though we are now in a different world, we are still racial discrimination. Some people don't feel racial equality yet. All men are created equal though. Actually, I think you are all well aware of it. It 's easier said than done, but we have to treat persons with discrimination.

Odd difference in two answers (leslie)

The different answers represent the reality. The white students didn't notice any racism on campus, while the black and native Americans said it was everywhere.

It is easy to see that there is different definition and understanding to racism. A lot of words and behaviors are racial discrimination to some people but not to the others. Just like the jokes which might be offensive to some people. People who said something offensive might say that they didn't mean that, but the result was it hurt some people. The reason is people define racism differently and their words or behaviors display it. That's why we say we should change people's perception, the way they see the world. It's hard to change but have to be changed, because with different perceptions, people can hardly get mutual understanding.
