Would you run away? (Svetlana)

“To her, the youngish black man- a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing heir, both hands showed into the pockets of a bulky military jacket-seemed menacingly close”.

This phrase from the story of a young guy who had troubles with communication to other people, because of the way he looks. In a beginning of his story he tells us about a young lady who prejudicially thought about him as about a maniac.

I think the writer is prejudiced himself. He didn’t know for sure the reason why the woman “disappeared a cross the street”. In his explanation he concentrated more of an intention on a fact of his skin color, but let’s look at this situation if this man was white. The woman probably would run away as well. Because huge white male with beard and billowing heir doesn’t look less dangerous to a young woman, who is alone on a street. I can tell it from own experience. I would run away as well, doesn’t matter what skin color has a stranger who doesn’t look safe to me. I know it’s not right to judge anyone the way he/ she looks, but in this situation running away is a demonstration of an instinct of self-preservation.

Prejudice comes two ways and it's also double-edged. (Leslie)

Prejudice, same as love, comes two ways. When you discriminate others, you are discriminated by them. Then this double-edged sword hurts both. If you love someone, you will be loved back. Then it blosoms both.

I hope this black guy feel less hurt and humiliated by people's reaction toward him, and he is definitely not the guy to be blamed to have those feelings. He is also one of the victims who didn't do anything to deserve it.

Just hope that he can find better way to bring less fear to his "victims".

The woman, as well as you, is not the one to blame, either, to run away from any danger for self protection.

What on earth is that "something" which brings fears to both sides?

I saw a really differnt view in your comment. Yes, I think in some degree the writer is prejudicing himself. Just a woman quckily moved away from him really cannot indicate that she was scared by the writer. He should also gain some self-confidence not only complain about other people's racial discrimination on him!
