Your focus should not be on oil itself as a kind of fuel. Instead, you should focus on the social conflicts over oil, such as wars, terrorism, lies, malicious competition, invasion, etc.
How oil is formed and refined should only be useful if you are going to explain why oil becomes such a precious resources that so many countries are fighting against each other over it.
As a result, the global warming, greenhouse effect, pollution, might not be so necessary to elaborate in details.
