Outline for reserch paper (Yi Feng Wang)

Outline of essay 3
Purpose: Do research on the Opium War period, and talk about China’s confronting culture conflicts in this war.

Audience: People who are interested in history and culture conflict.

Tone: In a objective view which analyse the whole war.

Thesis statement: During the Opium War, foreign countries had fierce culture conflicts with China. After this war, China began to modernize. Argue what this war bring to China, and are culture conflicts positive or negative to China.

Structure:1. A brief introduction to the Opium War in China, and state it is the beginning of modernization of China.
2.Describe the culture conflicts happened in China during the war, and talk about the reason and what it brought to China.
(1).Chinese opium eater became weak and suffered from illness. Chinese governers had to put some policy in force. The English invader compelled Chinese government to sign a series of unequal treaties. It is shameful to China.
(2).Argue the reason why these culture conflicts happened.
(3).Get the conclusion that what it brought to China. In short term, it brought China misery. China become a semi-colonial and semi-feudal rule society. However, in a objective view, it brought modernization to China.
3.Argue whether culture conflicts are positive or not to China.
(1).In short term, China suffered a lot. It losed a great deal of silver. Many Chinese died from opium. A part of territory of China fell into enemy’s hands.
(2).In economy side, China was enrolled in the world capitalism market. It is positive because China followed trend of the times though it was forced to.
(3).In politics side, China transform from a feudal society into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal rule society. It is positive because Chinese began to realize that backward nations tend to get beaten up. Feudalism can not bring Chinese people true happiness, it is a must to abolish feudalism.
4.Conclusion: Culture conflicts happened in Opium War had both positive and negative effects on China, and the positive effects played a dominant role. Those conflicts brought modernization to China, and China changed a lot.

What are the culture conflicts Opium War brought to China? What culture? Can Opium War be defined as culture conflicts. It is political invasion in the form of economic invasion.

What you really try to prove is that any kind of collision, positive or negative, might bring about more contacts and changes to each other, which can be both positive and negative.

The ideas and structure are fine, but just be careful about your viewpoints.
