why there is a unequal society in Afghan?(shengwei tao)

In this article, it write about a Journalist immigrated to New York city, after the second world war. And the majority of point is Afghan woman is not equal to man in her society, even they immigrated to New York.
from this sentence " there's a saying that the food your husband feeds you doesn't come for free". It makes me laughing, because it indicates an unequal society in Afghan, although it is the tranditional curtural in Afghan. But from my point of view, I disagree that woman are treated like dogs in her society.
