As my opinion from the essay "Reality TV: Surprising throw back to the past?",what the author want to say is, although the reality TV is the new fashion and have great originality, it is still the same as the formal social arrangement for younger members find mates in the old days. The author always talk about the women is Jan Austen's novel, as he said:" A woman who is not married by her late 20s is doomed to be and old maid". Yes, actually, these women are mostly seem married as a task. They try to do their best to find a nice husband and get happy life. In this way, these young women and men still can not make sure the man/woman is the right one, they always need other familiar people's help. In the old days, these people are their parents. In reality TV, these familiar include their family members and best friends, even TV audience but not just themselves. On another side, women join the reality TV because these "good husbands" always handsome, have a high degree and they have enough money. As the author says, "Money played a large role in the Victorian and Edwardian contract as well".

American TV shows are usually very special and creative. After tons of talk show, we meet reality TV shows now. From this article, we can find the TV show Cupid which is a reality dating show. The heroine will choose her dating mate though many suitors. If the suitor marries the heroine-Lisa, they can receive a 1 million check which attract many people. Many people think this kind of TV show is very interesting, but it already existed for a long time. The only difference is that it does a little change in the processes. They modern people use three-minute get- to- know- you replace old waltzes at a ball. Long time past from Jane Austen’s age, however, people still do the same thing. Friends and family help you to pick up your husband through judging their appearance and behavior. In my view and my country’s tradition, it’s very weird to show off to people about the private life. So we can see that, in the end of the show, Lisa is still dating with the man selected for her, but they refused to receive the money. Is that a proof of true love or they want to tell everybody they really love each other? Maybe just they can know themselves.

Party is a popular form for communication among the people in both east and west countries. People like to get together with others, friends or strangers, and talk about news or some topics they interest in. There are two different ways to have party in east and west.

Through those pictures, the first one show that people in a party stand or sit together as many groups or single. This is a party in west countries. They like to talk only with a few people once when they in a party; and they will change partners or leave them alone when they finished a topic. Because talking with only one or two people is easier to express their opinions and show themselves to each other. Communicate with people and make friends are their main purpose in a party.

The second picture is shows that all the people sit in a circle. This is a representative party in east countries. Easterner like hustle and bustle, they always have party with their friends not strangers. The party always with the dinner, so that’s why we found people sit as a circle in the second picture, the circle means a table. And they usually don’t have a mainly topic when they talking. Sometimes people can’t remember what they talked about when the party is finished, they only can feel a happy feeling from the party. Happy and enjoy is the purpose when eastern people have a party.

We love have party, but different purpose make different form of party between easterner and westerner. I think it’s depends on the personality and cultures of people who from the different country. So interesting is it!

1. At the modern time, women pay attention at man that kind is, Whether right for each other on the interest and personality etc, but this TV show let people more think at outside looking, background and family. This is a retrograde step in human personality.
2. Longtime ago, women’s marriage were deicide by their parents. In this TV shows, they decided by their parents. Its absently same thing. People don’t have any rights to freedom of choice.
3. The temptation of money, a million dollars. Someone joined this show only for this 1 million, their motivation becomes ill. I disagree the picture of "transportation", because it showed western transportation is bike. But from i see, the western car much more than Eastern like as Britsh, American. The set of pictures presented in class showed huge differences between Eastern and Western countries. The picture of two parts provides a thought of time between Eastern and Western people. It shows that Westerns think time is to be strictly observed, while Eastern think time could be reset due to the certain situation. Since global market economy has been growing mature, it is no longer uncommon for us to see firms from multiple countries doing business together. Therefore, time is becoming an important issue. As time goes by, people from Eastern countries have noticed the importance of time when doing business and communicating with people from Western countries. “Be on time” is now become a worldwide rule to every single one of us.

Another picture describes the thought of parents and children. With the child in the middle, and parents surrounded, no doubt, it is a picture of an Eastern family. Parents and grandparents from Eastern countries regard children as the center of family. They take good care of children and meet all the needs of children. Any little harm to children is unforgivable. Sometimes, grandparents give even more love. Whenever and whatever, children are always children in their minds. In the Western countries, children are taken care by their father and mother. They are taught to be independent. Westerns take much count of children’s education, no matter literal or humanistic. Children are grown with responsibilities, both for society and family. In Westerns’ minds, children will turn to man and women in the future, so that independence is the only thing they can count on.

East and West’s thoughts are different from many ways. Each thought is combined with local culture, education and traditions. Different thoughts are developed to suit different cultures. The differences between Western and Eastern are directly showed on these pictures. Two ways of punctuality are not the same. The left one shows the point of the clock, the minute and hour hand point 12. One the right clock, there is arcuate represents 20 minutes around the 12 o'clock. The whole picture means if we make an appointment, the Easterns would come early or late. The Westerns would be on time. It's a good habbit to come on time without waiting.

In my opinion, not all Eastern people prefer to be late. Maybe the situation depend on person's characteristic. Some people don't care of the time. Some people don't pay more attention on calculating the traffic time or probability of accident. For instance, the girl is late on usual when she is dating with a boy. Because the girl pays too much time on dressing and making up to forget the time. The comparison picture cannot display the tipical point which is difference between the Western and Eastern.

The name of " The Child" picture is interesting and attractive. In the Western family, the child hvae equal statues, but in Eastern family, family members take care of the only child. From this picture, we can see the Westerner think ways like a "straight line" and The Easterner's look like "complicated curve". I agree with this opinion but not totally. For example, Easterners always like save money, because they think if someday they get a serious sick or their companies bankruptcy, they will use these money to make a living.They are focus on the future.And the Westerners are thinking about "today. This picture looks like an electrocardiogram. But actually, it shows that in contrast to westerners, easterners usually keep quiet in a restaurant.

I have lived in China for 20 years and I came to America almost half a year ago. So I know what the difference in China and in America is.

Easterners like talking and chatting when they eat, so it sometimes makes the restaurant very noisy. Westerners also talk when they eat, but they talking in a low voice. I think it doesn’t mean which side is right, it just the different culture in east and in west.

These different icons provide us an idea for the differences between east and west countries. The icons show the behavior of eastern and western people . despite this fact some of these pictures does not show the reality . actually I’m part of eastern culture and I know their features that why I’m saying that some of these pictures doesn’t fit to the eastern people altitude. I plan to comment three of these pictures and to show what Is true and what not.
Firstly the pictures shows that east and west people differ in the way they say their opinions. Western people if they have to sow an opinion or something else they go straight to that, saying it without any problem or thinking a lot about what they are going to say . contrary eastern people if they are going to express an opinion they are going to think a lot before they are going to say it. Also in their mind they will have like a circle for that opinion and they are going to say it in the way that the other person in front of them is not affected directly by their words. In my opinion these picture is real because eastern people always are afraid to say their opinion because they are more humanity and for them to brake the heart of the people is hard .this is the reason why they don’t say straight their opinion. But western people don’t care they are more selfish because they way of live is individual without o lot of friends.
Another picture shows that western people are more punctual then eastern people . for eastern people it says that they might be early or late . this is not true from my point of view because I know a lot of western people who are punctual and they are not late. I think that punctuality it depends from the person and from his character . because some people are used to take life as easy and some not, they work hard to achieve good results.
Thirdly another picture shows the way how they handle their problems. From the picture we can understand that if Eastern people encounter something that goes wrong they are not going straight to solve it . but they are going around it . Contrary western people choose to go straight to solve their problems . in my opinion this fact also depend from the person because I’m from east and I choose to go straight to solve the problems . the reason why I think that this picture is not true is because this differences might have exist in the past but if we talk today it is different. Today the world is more difficult and you have to be more direful and you have to go straight to everything if you want to be successful and to earn money. If you do not do this you will be every time the second and not the first.
The reason why I choose to comment these three pictures is that I have found them to express the three important features of o person. also from these picture I have had the chance to say which of them is correctly feature of east or west people. From my point of view differences exist in the past from a lot of reasons such as political, geographical , cultural .But today life is different because people have the chance to travel outside their country and to expend their knowledge and to adapt with new things.

First of all, in the word "Eastern", it includes many countries. There're many cultural differences between Japan and China. The slide punctually is interesting to me. It says Eastern people are lazy to time.However in Japan, to be on time is important to us. Every train come every 5 minutes under the time schedule. If you don't keep a time, you lose your friend's trust.

Second, In the restaurant, it says eastern people are noisy. I think some people is so, but some Western people who come to Japan are more noisy than Japanese people. Why they feel Eastern people is noisy? This is because they can't understand other language, then unfamiliar language make people uncomfortable. If I hear unknown language that sound is just sound which doesn't have any means. Knowing or not knowing make different answer in any situation.

Topics in that paper are very first person opinion. He judge many things by one side. He sees every topic in his way of think. And, most of them include a misunderstand. I think to know other is not a judge others.

While people happen some accident, and really in an emergency, so problem is to face or escape it ? Most people would said, it depends, because if it's a tough question, so it may better to skip it, but if it's easy,oh, just face it, and show off to your friends.

Actually, this is a Chinese Logic. Maybe it's eastern logic. Its a sad truth, but i have to recognize it in a really fair way.

So what's the western's thinking? Mostly, they would choose to face the question,even it's tough enough. It make them like to accept a challenge. Then people will have the glory and happy to share it with their friends.

Asian people like to take photos when they travel because they want to record their memory about the tour, and the beautiful scenery. In contrast, western people is different. They like to go to travel but just to go there and experience the magnificance of the landscape. So they don't often take photos during the tour.

For me, i prefer taking photos when i go to somewhere that aurant me. I hope the photos can remind me of the happiness during the travel and the beauty of the landscape. Whenever and whereever.

A Critique about “East vs West” （Xing.Pan）

“East vs West”, from the literally means to see or distinguish things from different points of view. The differences between Eastern and Western culture can be compared to sports; such as soccer and basketball. Even from the surface we can easily detect differences between the East and West. These differences include customs, cultures, and traditions just to name a few.

I agree with some of the picture. Differences between the East and West vary greatly and can be seen mostly everywhere. From the picture above, Western people take Chinese food as a treat and Eastern people take Western-style food as a treat. Another example would be something so simple as a shower. People in the West typically shower is in the morning, whereas people from the East shower in the evening. Besides personal hygiene, people from the East and West tend to express their feelings differently as well. When upset, Westerners would easily show their expression, whether it be vocally or a facial expression. Easterners are most likely to hide their feelings and go with the flow, and not dropping hints.

Conclusion：
The world within the diversification can make our lives become more rich and colorful, where the East and West could learn from each other, and the Harmonious World will become, more beautiful and peaceful.

Among the series of pictures about the differences between East & West by Liu Young, the "Traveling" picture has drawn my attention. In the picture, the artist, who is a Chinese but grown up in Germany, has claimed that Easterners take a lot of picture while traveling whereas Westerners only enjoy the sights with their own eyes. The artist has assumed that everybody from the same region always have the same preferences, which to me, is not true. People have different way to enjoy their trip and even they are from the same country, they could have different preferences. Some may prefer taking a lot of pictures so they can enjoy the view later on but some would be just fine enjoying the view with their eyes, and it's not necessary that they have to come from the same country. Even though I found it's great to compare different cultures as we can always learn something from it, but to make it reliable, the artist should keep her ideas more optimistic and balance.

The writer, Cohen, claims that this kind of shows represents a “cynical and tasteless new genre”, “another sign of America’s moral decline.” People who take part in those shows have something in common with characters in Jane Austen’s and Edith Wharton’s novels, ironically, in a negative side.

Lisa Shannon in “Cupid” put herself in hands of others, her friends and the TV viewers, believing that they can find her true love. She also had an old and wrong idea that “a woman who is not married by her late 20s is doomed to be an Old Maid.” Even Lisa’ decision is not appreciated, the final selection is turned over to TV viewers.

A Critique of "Pictures" Shota Takemura

In the class, I saw the pictures, which show the difference between behaviors of Eastern people and that of Western people. I agreed with most of those pictures. Typically, Eastern people prefer being with others and being in a group. But, I disagreed with some of them.

First, I didn't agree with the picture that shows Eastern people are happy even in the rainy day and Westerners are not. I strongly disagree with it, because of course, most of Eastern people don't like the rainy day and it depends on person, not nationality.

Second, I didn't agree with the picture, punctuality. It said that Western people tend to do something on time and Eastern people can be flexible about time. I can agree with the idea that Eastern people can be flexible. But, they like to do something on time. For example, in Japan, trains and buses come on time. But, in U.S., they always are late. In my opinion,　Western people are lack of the conscience about time, compared to Easterners. Therefore, Eastern people can be flexible about time and also be punctual about time.

Then, I got an interest about the picture of "The child". It said that Western people respect a child in the same way to other adults, he is a member of family. On the other hand, Eastern people take care of a child like this pictures. I didn't know that situation in Western countries.

These pictures were so interesting. Our behaviors can be defined by categorizing. It can be said that our behavior come from our long history.

I agree with most of the pictures, but I don’t think some of them got the right points. Like the picture “transportation” described the western and Chinese about using the car and bike. The bottom two pictures are completely wrong. How many people ride a bike can you see on the road in NewYork? Maybe once a week, how about cars? The road block everyday, is that a reason by there are a lot of bikes on the road? No, cars! “I’m very close to my family and that helps me because they want to do what’s best for me.” It may seems Afghan women are oppressed to us, but they may have an opposite vision. Living in Afghanistan, a country with traditional ideas, there is a different way and different opinion on happiness. It was a surprise when I saw this sentence in the article. Even many people outside Afghanistan think the same way, parents always do what is best for us, but we never let our parents to arrange our marriage. Parents are not choosing husbands for their daughters in fact. No doubt, they care their daughters’ happiness, but in the meanwhile, they are choosing guys who are capable to feed their daughters. It is true, economic foundation is important, but not the most. At least, love is not the thing included.

For me, Afghan women are treated as slaves. Their men release their anger by beating them. "Afghan people can't meet each other prior to getting engaged.” Everyone is blinded by arranged marriage. A gentle and apprehensive husband is the best thing ever in a woman’s life. How can we know if he is the one without meeting and hanging out with each other?

The traditional marriage in Afghanistan is pretty interesting. In the article, two Afghans women live in Flushing, Queens, they are waiting for their parents to pick their spouses. They go to college to prusue proffessions. In Afghan marriage, the parents often arrange their daughters' marrage. In Afghan conventions if a girl pick her husbands by herself, she would become a discredit to her family. Also, nothing would stop gossip. The honor of her family would be broken. Anyway, the womanhoods don't have enough rights for their patriarchal culture eventhough their politics try to change the situation.

The Afghan culture seems ironclad. The women's rights of marriage and work are limited. The partiarchal culture sustain remnants. In my opinion, the marriage is so important to girl's life. The memoir “On my road” by Holland Cotter tells what and how the writer saw the world during and after a bus trip from Boston to Texas. At first, he said that he was going to visit his friend in a reform school in Austin, Texas. However, the main purpose of the young man was to know more about the USA, especially the things that he would never see in his place. He chose bus for the trip. He brought with him a lot of novels and a “romantic view of bus travel” because a character in his favorite book “On the road” came to New York City with his teenage wife. Ironically, he soon found out that buses were the transportation for poor people, especially black people. It was June of 1964 when Cotter started his trip; the whole country was heated up by Kennedy’s assassination and the Vietnam War. It was a good chance for him to realize that reality is not as romantic as novels.

Things that he saw during the trip supported the idea more strongly. As he went south, he gradually realized the gap between the white and the black. First, he was told about “apartheid”. Although he was “immersed in African America”, which was meant by pop culture, he was still a white guy living in such a place that there was hardly a black person. People in his place tried to ignore the issue, that’s why he couldn’t have any idea about it. The second thing that he saw was poverty of black people in North Carolina. He was also very surprised when knowing about the disappearance of 3 civil-rights workers, two of them white and from the North. Then, he knew that the white were not welcomed there, even if they were “civil-rights workers”. Next, he went to Atlanta, where he witnessed racial discrimination at another level. Restaurants had side windows to serve black, drinking fountains were labeled “black” and “white”. There, discrimination was public. No one protested against it, no one could protest against it. On the trip, he met a “scared teenage soldier” on the way from his home to his base then on to Vietnam. However, the young soldier didn’t know anything about the war. Neither did Americans.

After the trip, Cotter changed his viewpoints to his favorite novels. He realized their descriptions of African-Americans “seemed cartoonish, false, often mean” because they were written by white Americans. New experience that he gained during the trip made him much more knowledgeable and helped him see the country more familiar. Then he decided to read less and discover the world by his own eyes and ears. Finally, he chose art to be his thing, but he reflected reality in his works and didn’t include any “color lines”.

The trip totally changed Cotter’s perspectives and viewpoints about the world. It even helped him figure out which way he should go for the rest of his life. I always believed that the more we go, the more mature we can be and that’s definitely true in Cotter’s case. The youth should go as much as possible, to learn and discover the world, societies and the life.
