Form Ragged Dick

the sense that there is a moral economy in the world, that good is rewarded and evil is punished(George F. Will) .That's all right. One good turn deserves another. Last time you helped someone, maybe next time, someone ganna help you when you need help. This story showed this truth clearly.
This story is about Dick who was a poor guy and he had to work hard every day for 3 dollars. One day, he saw a boy felt into water, and no one help him. He didn’t think it too much. Then he jumped into the river and save him desperately. Finally, the boy was saved. After that, his salary increased 10 dollars per day from 3 dollars a day. And his life became better. He was so luck. Otherwise, I think this result is inevitable. I always believe that “One good turn deserves another”. You do more good deeds, you will get more help from others, and any other thing you want to do is also easier.
Be honest, nowadays, the people like Dick are getting less and less. Most people did things after thinking about themselves. I admired him a lot, if I was there, maybe I could jump into the river to help that boy. But after this reading, if someone needs help, I will do my best to help him, so, maybe someday I can also get a good return. ^_^ I do really want to have some friends like him. We can help each other and improve our by the help form each other.

Take a chance (SooHyeon. Kang)

As we read the story of Dick, some people might think he is just so lucky. And he gained more things than he made efforts only by one chance to rescue a boy who were confronted with a crisis and had rich father. But, actually his success was not accidental. Although he helped others without any intent to gain something, that kind of efforts to help others brought an opportunity and a good luck.
My father always says efforts are bound to find luck sooner or later. So, he says we should try many things to take a chance which will come someday and in the case of late try, we might miss more timely opportunities to develop. Take SONY as an example. It is widely known that SONY once dominated the world market with its innovative and advanced gadgets in past decades. At that time, there was no counterpart to vie for supremacy. However, before long, SONY was overtaken other late runners since it hesitated to spend a significant amount of money on developing high-tech devices, and instead pursued stability and maintenance. Not only the SONY case but also the failures of many other companies clearly manifest that enough money should be timely invested to get ahead in the future. In this sense, we need to do something steadily or timely like Dick to catch a chance.

One good return deserves another （Hao Su)

At first I found that Dick is a lucky man. He risked his life to save a drowning child. But he refused the reward money from boy’s father, and then he obtained a well-paid work. Dick’s opportunity was not accidental. Dick is an honest man. His honest win the opportunity. We can imagine that if it is a selfish person would certainly not rescue the children. If that person tries his or her best to rescue the child in order to get paid, the child's father would not take him as a true friend.

In the final Dick accepted the job. But it is because he like and need this job. I believe that if he has already had a job, he will not accept this well-intentioned. This is a man of integrity.

In the real life this kind of people are very few. We are all being deceived by material desires. No one can endure all the material temptations. So to be a person like Dick is not easy.

Ragged Dick (Ying Yi Chen)

This article was talked about Dick's story.
At first, he was not rich and can't speak English even nobody know him. When he plunge into the river to rescue the little boy, i was thought in nowadays how many people can do this behavior to save the child. Because we dont want get any trouble even it's not our business.
Because of his brave, ambitious and the chance who gave him in America. Finally, he became a successful man that everybody admire him.
Sometimes, i had a good chance, but i didnt catch it. He is a lucky guy, because someone gave him a job and chance.
The article gave me a point, i have to do my best everyday, not just think myself.
Now, we cant find like a Dick very few. If we want help people, we also consider about the reward. It's not good for us. When i finish the article,i learned a lesson from here. I have to think my life in the future and dont waste my time anymore if I want to be rich.

RAGGED DICK (YEN-CHIEH CHEN)

This story tells us that you should become “YES MAN” which means you should hold any opportunity even if you don’t want to. If you help people without considering the advantage, you will get more opportunities than other people. People think only what I am going to get now when they help people. Most people don’t consider the value further. Everyone knows “Butterfly effect” which means even though you are just done a small thing and then everything may be affected by you. You help people without any benefit, but you might get unexpected value in the future. This value may bigger than your thought and it can’t be estimated. On the other hand, intangible value is important as well such as your feeling or other people’s evaluation of you. Any opportunity can change your life. However, I think a selfish person can’t get a pretty good opportunity which means say “YES” to people who need help.

What I learn from the character of Ragged Dick

In this story, I found that Ragged Dick has a quality of detachment and his self-honesty fosters integrity as well as his achievements toward life. His is also likely to be ambitious, keep in mind to give more rooms for innovation and advance his level. But still is prepared to work hard and weather the difficult periods in order to achieve his goals. It shows how he deals with his working life and goals in this chapter. Even he is going to higher position, he still want keep his old stuff to remind himself of the hard. He is probably a steady, determined worker and he expect nothing to be easy, and never take for granted the support and good will of others. Still, he is always welling to see new opportunities when they arrive on your doorstep. I think because he is loyal and devoted, and feeling that he is always able to offer practical help to others. Like the part in the story, he carried his colleague to take his place after he quit. I really think he is so supportive and genuinely concerned about the people around him or even the stranger. So that’s why he let himself involve into the unnecessary risk-taking to save the boy’s life by jumping into the water. With his integrity, self-discipline and a respect for the old fashioned virtues of loyalty and chariness for others, of course his reputation reflects his good personalities. When the chance coming, People can easily recognize his worth and receive the kind of recognition he deserves. Because he owns such quality of his personality, it ensures that he is likely to be a very high achiever later on. From this story, I think Ragged Dick can be a good model for us to learn.

changes always happens suddenly, and you can never expect it.
the change which happened to Dick occared suddenly. Dick used to working at a store for three dollars every day. but one day, he saved a boy who fell into the water. but in this chapter, i really wondered why the father of the boy didnt try to save the boy by himself and just asked everyone to save his kid? the kid worths only ten thousands dollars for him?? it is not a point of this story, but it made me have the question. anyway Dick was very brave, and he saved the boy without considering any rewords. after that with his rewording this action, his salary became higher, and he started to get ten dollars every day.
i thought that wht i have done will return to me somehow sometime. so i should do everything my best every moment.

Dick is a lucky man. He’s been a man who was worried about money every day. But once he got a chance. And he hold the chance.

One day he saw a boy dropped into water, but no one can save him. Dick knew he was good at swimming, so he jumpped into the water and tried his best to save that boy.

It never occurred to him that he saved the buy and get a new job which he was really wanted. Before he got the job, his salary was 3 dollars per week, but after that his salary was 10 dollars per week. It was amazing for him.

You never know what will be happened. If someone need help, just tried to reach out to them. Don’t demand a reasonable amount of dividends now. Your effort will pay off one day.

If Everyone Is Like Dick

Obviously, I want to have some friends like DICK who can tell me the truth and try to be him toughly. My friend has told me a true essence that never expect others pay a debt of gratitude when you are helping them. I know she is right. So I totally understand the reaction when DICK got the new suit. But in this world, people except to get the reward from others but others just take the help for granted. Everyone wants to get more without paying. So I want my people like DICK.
And I’m pretty sure my people who just treat me as I treat them as well. And I find that as I grow up, I just become a false tongue. I smile to someone I don’t like, when I have different opinions I don’t say and just chose to evade the issues rather than facing them. I know deeply in my heart I don’t treat them as my friends. I try to be nice, nothing is wrong. But I still have my principles; if you break it on purposes I should be mad and treat them as common friends no longer. It is hurt. Everyone is selfish more or less, nobody is perfect. But I know that it is worthy to pay out to someone valued.
I hate people complaining every day, unfortunately I is one of them. All right, it seems I need to improve myself again. life is short and find someone who you can trust.

Dick who saved from people and brave without serious thinking. If in the world, many people who are kind of dick live together, we don't think about competiton with other people. I think if Dick act like the article, his life could risk. If i were him, i couldn't be brave although I thought I need to do or, not. Even though Dick got a good job from his father, he never thought about he was going to get it in his future. When he resign from his business, he gave a person who really want to get to ther company.
I sometimes when i have a good chance instead of my closed friend, I wouldn't offer to my friend for my future. Most of people believe that people have a fortune. For me, i also believe a little bit about that but people should endeavor thier eveything for enjoying life.

First of all this article didnt impress me at all. After i've read it, i dont want to read the whole story about this guy. Why? Because when you're reading this chapter, seems like Dick was a kind of guy, you know,who is too good, who is doing everything for "A+" He didnt spend his money for bars and casinos, no drugs, he doesnt have fun a lot, just working, and in his first day off work he desided to go....yeah to have an excursion....Pretty strange decision for a young boy. Do i wanna know him after reading it? Nope. It was very predictable that he will save the lil boy, that he will refuse to take money and ect... Very boring chapter.

Why/How Dick changed

Dick was ragged. After something happened, he became not ragged any more, and just changed his whole life. We can say he was lucky because he met a good opportunity; or we can say he improved his life by himself because he grasped that opportunity.

On the other hand, Dick was absolutely nice guy. As the writer described in paragraph 10, “His determination was formed before he heard the liberal offer made by the boy’s father.” Dick jumped into the water to rescue the boy, not for the offer. There are still a lot of people who were unmoved when a child fell into the water but energetic after the parent made the label offer.

Be honest, if I was also there with Dick, I must be hesitated. As usual, everybody does something after think about himself. So was I. If I try to rescue the boy, I might be neither able to save him nor myself. It wasn’t worth for sacrificing another life. All I could do was asking for help. I am not ashamed for my think about this because I can’t swim. Jumping into the water blindly is not wise choice for me.

Generally speaking, I admire Dick for his brave and kind heart. And also I think Mr. Rockwell is a reliable gentleman.

A Kind Hearted Person ( Thanh Tran-Terry)

Dick saved the boy without thinking although it could risk his life. He is really a kind hearted person. I really admire him because I don’t know if I were in his situation, I could do like him or not. As my mother often said “when you do a good thing without thinking for you, something good will come to you” and Dick was rewarded. He was offered a good job that he never thought that he could get. When he retired from business, he left his job for a man who needed it. He never forgets that he also had an old vagabond life with nick name “Ragged Dick”. He had a chance to change his life and now it is time for him to give another chance to someone who really needs it.

Sometimes, I think about the meaning of life. I realize that life is always fair. It never takes nor gives someone all the things. Life is difficult but if we keep trying and never give up, we will get what we want. Dick’s story really gives me a hope that I will succeed if I do all I can. Besides, it makes me feel happy because I know that in this world, there are people who always respect the value of lives. They help other people with kind hearts.

This story tells us a story about Dick. He saved a boy who fell into foaming water. He is an expert swimmer, he tries his best to save the little boy. As return, the boy’s father offered him a job which earned ten dollars a week. It;s more than what he earned before. It’s just a windfall. But at last, Dick decided to leave his work to people who need it more than him. I think it’s a young gentleman on the way to fame and fortune.
For many people, they will not risk their live for strangers. However, Dick did it. Maybe many people will say that this is a stupid action. It’s dangerous to make a joke with own lives. But I think we should recognize his behavior. It is selflessness. Nowadays, fewer people willing to help the others. They just take care about themselves. They always scheme how to put off rivals. They regard fame and fortune as centers of their lives. They struggle whole lives for fame and fortune. However, they forget something more important. It is the real value of lives. Society competition makes us lose the correct values. We don’t know what we really want. Actually, we should realize that fame and fortune exists short. But what we learn from the life process can exist longer.

This article talks about prejudice which means some people look down others because they have different colors, languages, or countries. This issue is always around us. However, what cause people to prejudice others? In my opinion, first reason is money. Back to few decades, if black people had mass of money and had most powerful weapons, who dare to prejudice black people. Second reason is history. Now, we learn faults, success and right and wrong from history. Some people prejudice other country because of wars in history. Countries got benefit from wars. However, we learned a lot from wars, therefore, now countries get their benefit via other ways. I don’t think there has any reason that anyone should be blame for the history. I have a friend who told me that he would not be friend with Japanese because of history. Indeed, I don’t agree with him, but I don’t think there has any way that can change his mind. Final reason is education and it is most important thing. I think if we get better education, then the prejudice will reduce. That the reason that the prejudice is getting less. However, I don’t think there is any good reason that allows people to prejudice or to be prejudiced. My friend who is from Brazil told me “I am not better than anyone, but no one better than me either”. I always think about this.

In this brief personal essay, the author is an Arab American. She tells people her experiences about anti-Arab prejudice, and she how to struggle. There are too many things in the world, which we can not talk and understand them clearly. In our lives, how to make a friend, how to keep friendship，which are our problems. In the world, how to run the country, which is a big problem for the government.
There is no denying; racism is still in the world. As the author, she is facing in her lives. But it has a bigger change than before. Everyone needs to open his heart, which can accept more different people and culture.
Although I never meet such a serious racism in my life, some small things in our lives, which prove we need to open our heart to everyone and everything. In my middle school, we must live in the school. But past one month, my roommates quarreled about some little things. I think if we could trust others to open our mind, this quarrel would not have in our life. So, I think everybody should have a trust to others and open your mind to solve questions in our lives.

Before I read the article, I could not guess what the title want to say to us : Long overdue.
I thought many various things about "overdue" But I knew the meaning after reading the article and the author's purpose. Naomi is an Arab American and she heard bad things about Arab in England. She was very angry and mad for that kind of saying, she could not tell anything to them. actually I have same experience with Naomi.
When I came in New York, I did not speak English very well.
I lived in dormitory and I met many international students at there.
But one of my international friends told me about East Asia. She had kind of bad bias. she thought Asian people are poor and they have very low culture. I was very mad but I could not say anything because I did not want to argue with her. My English speaking skill was very low and I did not how to confute with her. It became "long overdue".
I had same emotion with author at that moment.
And I realized we need to lean about another countries culture and we have to recognize that different countries have different culture.

I have some friend that i can make all kinds of joks that won't even be angry, and i have some of friend that even i make a little joks they will me angry and mad. Long Overdue for me (Yanjun Li)

The article takes me much time to read, I have many common points with the author and it let me think about so many things which I have been past for long overdue.
I have a bad habit which is I don’t do something until the due time is coming soon, like now I just have one hour to write this impression of this Long Overdue. This bad habit let me lose many important things. Such as miss the chance for part-time job, some food be overdue can’t to eat. And don’t to see my grandpa until he died. So many things let me so compunction.
I don’t review the knowledge which I learn in school without delay, then to do the homework in a short time to catch the time. I don’t change the clothes until the cold weather is coming then make me have a cold. I don’t eat some food until my stomach is so ache. Even though I don’t tell my parents how much I miss them until crying in my bed along. When I was a child I get this bad habit let I miss so many chance go play with others then stay along by myself. So sometimes my character has a little strange like liveliness but stay along so much time.
Through this article I know I want to change myself about action for my life, I must do something in time then don’t let me regret when the time is pass and the people was gone. I will to call my parents and friends so much I miss them. Don’t let them angst me. And I positive to the life and make it better and better.
