These different icons provide us an idea for the differences between east and west countries. The icons show the behavior of eastern and western people . despite this fact some of these pictures does not show the reality . actually I’m part of eastern culture and I know their features that why I’m saying that some of these pictures doesn’t fit to the eastern people altitude. I plan to comment three of these pictures and to show what Is true and what not.
Firstly the pictures shows that east and west people differ in the way they say their opinions. Western people if they have to sow an opinion or something else they go straight to that, saying it without any problem or thinking a lot about what they are going to say . contrary eastern people if they are going to express an opinion they are going to think a lot before they are going to say it. Also in their mind they will have like a circle for that opinion and they are going to say it in the way that the other person in front of them is not affected directly by their words. In my opinion these picture is real because eastern people always are afraid to say their opinion because they are more humanity and for them to brake the heart of the people is hard .this is the reason why they don’t say straight their opinion. But western people don’t care they are more selfish because they way of live is individual without o lot of friends.
Another picture shows that western people are more punctual then eastern people . for eastern people it says that they might be early or late . this is not true from my point of view because I know a lot of western people who are punctual and they are not late. I think that punctuality it depends from the person and from his character . because some people are used to take life as easy and some not, they work hard to achieve good results.
Thirdly another picture shows the way how they handle their problems. From the picture we can understand that if Eastern people encounter something that goes wrong they are not going straight to solve it . but they are going around it . Contrary western people choose to go straight to solve their problems . in my opinion this fact also depend from the person because I’m from east and I choose to go straight to solve the problems . the reason why I think that this picture is not true is because this differences might have exist in the past but if we talk today it is different. Today the world is more difficult and you have to be more direful and you have to go straight to everything if you want to be successful and to earn money. If you do not do this you will be every time the second and not the first.
The reason why I choose to comment these three pictures is that I have found them to express the three important features of o person. also from these picture I have had the chance to say which of them is correctly feature of east or west people. From my point of view differences exist in the past from a lot of reasons such as political, geographical , cultural .But today life is different because people have the chance to travel outside their country and to expend their knowledge and to adapt with new things.

East vs West ------ Ryuhei Yoshida

First of all, in the word "Eastern", it includes many countries. There're many cultural differences between Japan and China. The slide punctually is interesting to me. It says Eastern people are lazy to time. However in Japan, to be on time is important to us. Every train come every 5 minutes under the time schedule. If you don't keep a time, you lose your friend's trust.

Second, In the restaurant, it says eastern people are noisy. I think some people is so, but some Western people who come to Japan are more noisy than Japanese people. Why they feel Eastern people is noisy? This is because they can't understand other language, then unfamiliar language make people uncomfortable. If I hear unknown language that sound is just sound which doesn't have any means. Knowing or not knowing make different answer in any situation.

Topics in that paper are very first person opinion. He judge many things by one side. He sees every topic in his way of think. And, most of them include a misunderstand. I think to know other is not a judge others.

Face or Escape ( Jin Huang)

While people happen some accident, and really in an emergency, so problem is to face or escape it ? Most people would said, it depends, because if it's a tough question, so it may better to skip it, but if it's easy,oh, just face it, and show off to your friends.
Actually, this is a Chinese Logic. Maybe it's eastern logic. Its a sad truth, but i have to recognize it in a really fair way.
So what's the western's thinking? Mostly, they would choose to face the question, even it's tough enough. It make them like to accept a challenge. Then people will have the glory and happy to share it with their friends.
I think this is a very big problem between east and west. In this case, we must to face it bravely even the before.

Travel ( Hao-Hsiang Huang) ^^

Asian people like to take photos when they travel because they want to record their memory about the tour, and the beautiful scenery. In contrast, western people is different. They like to go to travel but just to go there and experience the magnificance of the landscape. So they don't often take photos during the tour.

For me, i prefer taking photos when i go to somewhere that aurant me. I hope the photos can remind me of the happiness during the travel and the beauty of the landscape. Whenever and whereever.

The child (Dun Gong)

The child
The western people charge a child like a member in the group. They are equal in many aspects and stand in the same position. They talk with each other in same way, such as they call their first name. On the other side, when the children go to school, their parents will require teachers arrange a person in the intersection traffic permitted, ensure the safety of the children.
Easterners charge the child like a star. They provide all the things that they can to the child. The grandparents are also need to take response to care the child. The parents, even the grandparents are centre with the child and they pick up children every day. They love their children and grandson, but they display the different way to express their love.
Comparing these two pictures, you can see the different culture in attitude of treat child.

Reality TV (Chao Zhou)

This artical talks about a woman joined a Reality TV show, and she wanted to find a boyfriend from this show. If they get married after this show, and one years later, they will get 10 thounsand dollar.
Now let's forget the man who get married with the girl from the TV show, we don't care his marriage was for the money or the love. Now loves seems to change back a few decades ago, grils through her friends to meet some boys, and then find a boyfriend. In the past, grils want to be able to free love, their partners always introduced by their parents.
The reason for this problem is that now there is lack of communication between people and stranger. People's living circle getting smaller and smaller, they don't know how to accost with the stranger, even they have a good impression for others. Human beings are social "animals", now more and more people become loner. This is a social's progress or regression?

Reality TV: Surprising Throwback to The Past(Lingli Huang)

In these recent years, relaity TV is more ans more popular. In the aticle "Reality TV: Surprising Throwback to The Past", the author mentions Lisa Shannon in Cupid who wants to choose her husband through the reality TV show. The situation is surprising similar witn in 19 centry.
In 19 centry, marrige has been decided in the same way with the TV show. "there's something familiar about the fortune hunters, the status seekers, the thwarted loves, the meddling friends, the public displays, the comic manners, and the sharp competitiveness---all find their counterpart in Jane Austen and Edith Wharton." "Only now, three-minutes get-to-know-you tryouts in a TV studio substitute for three-minute waltzes at a ball". The stiuation is in the same way.
The 19 centry ethos shows "A woman who is not married by her late 20s is dommed to be an Old Maid." That is why Lisa wants to go to the TV show, and the "she has put herself in the hands of others, trusting taht they will choose the right match." Lisa said "I've been looking for Mr. Right and I've just not been able to find him, based on my track road, I obviously need help." Yes, everyone will make mistake, so they need help. Lisa and he Mr. Right who selected for her continued to date in the year following Cupid's conclusion. Maybe it is a good result.

A Critique about “East vs West” (Xing.Pan)

“East vs West”, from the literally means to see or distinguish things from different points of view. The differences between Eastern and Western culture can be compared to sports; such as soccer and basketball. Even from the surface we can easily detect differences between the East and West. These differences include customs, cultures, and traditions just to name a few.

I agree with some of the picture. Differences between the East and West vary greatly and can be seen mostly everywhere. From the picture above, Western people take Chinese food as a treat and Eastern people take Western-style food as a treat. Another example would be something so simple as a shower. People in the West typically shower is in the morning, whereas people from the East shower in the evening. Besides personal hygiene, people from the East and West tend to express their feelings differently as well. When upset, Westerners would easily show their expression, whether it be vocally or a facial expression. Easterners are most likely to hide their feelings and go with the flow, and not dropping hints.

Conclusion:
The world within the diversification can make our lives become more rich and colorful, where the East and West could learn from each other, and the Harmonious World will become, more beautiful and peaceful.

East & West Pictures (Hoang Dinh)

Among the series of pictures about the differences between East & West by Liu Young, the "Traveling" picture has drawn my attention. In the picture, the artist, who is a Chinese but grown up in Germany, has claimed that Easterners take a lot of picture while traveling whereas Westerners only enjoy the sights with their own eyes. The artist has assumed that everybody from the same region always have the same preferences, which to me, is not true. People have different way to enjoy their trip and even they are from the same country, they could have different preferences. Some may prefer taking a lot of pictures so they can enjoy the view later on but some would be just fine enjoying the view with their eyes, and it's not necessary that they have to come from the same country. Even though I found it's great to compare different cultures as we can always learn something from it, but to make it reliable, the artist should keep her ideas more optimistic and balance.

Reality TV: surprising throwback to the past? (Phuong Nguyen)

The article “Reality TV: surprising throwback to the past?” discusses the genre of reality TV shows that are popular in recent years. The writer, Cohen, claims that this kind of shows represents a “cynical and tasteless new genre”, “another sign of America’s moral decline.” People who take part in those shows have something in common with characters in Jane Austen’s and Edith Wharton’s novels, ironically, in a negative side.

Lisa Shannon in “Cupid” put herself in hands of others, her friends and the TV viewers, believing that they can find her true love. She also had an old and wrong idea that “a woman who is not married by her late 20s is doomed to be an Old Maid.” Even Lisa’ decision is not appreciated, the final selection is turned over to TV viewers.

According to the writer, these shows are scorned for debasing the sanctity of marriage, for their “shallow, indecorous exhibitionism,” for the producer’s benefits. People in these shows may not find their love. Even when they end up getting married, no one can be sure that they can live happily till the end of their lives. They could end up in a “no-fault divorce.”

A Critique of "Pictures" Shota Takemura

In the class, I saw the pictures, which show the difference between behaviors of Eastern people and that of Western people. I agreed with most of those pictures. Typically, Eastern people prefer being with others and being in a group. But, I disagreed with some of them.
First, I didn't agree with the picture that shows Eastern people are happy even in the rainy day and Westerners are not. I strongly disagree with it, because of course, most of Eastern people don't like the rainy day and it depends on person, not nationality.
Second, I didn't agree with the picture, punctuality. It said that Western people tend to do something on time and Eastern people can be flexible about time. I can agree with the idea that Eastern people can be flexible. But, they like to do something on time. For example, in Japan, trains and buses come on time. But, in U.S., they always are late. In my opinion, Western people are lack of the conscience about time, compared to Easterners. Therefore, Eastern people can be flexible about time and also be punctual about time.
Then, I got an interest about the picture of "The child". It said that Western people respect a child in the same way to other adults, he is a member of family. On the other hand, Eastern people take care of a child like this pictures. I didn't know that situation in Western countries.
These pictures were so interesting. Our behaviors can be defined by categorizing. It can be said that our behavior come from our long history.

Critique on “Pictures” By Cunle.yu

I agree with most of the pictures, but I don’t think some of them got the right points. Like the picture “transportation” described the western and Chinese about using the car and bike. The bottom two pictures are completely wrong. How many people ride a bike can you see on the road in NewYork? Maybe once a week, how about cars? The road block everyday, is that a reason by there are a lot of bikes on the road? No, cars! China is a developing country, not every family can afford a car, so you still can see lots of bikes on the roads, and only the downtown’s traffic is terrible caused by car.
Also, I have a different point on picture “Punctuality”, I am studying in America now, the professor late work, students show up late, and everything will be delay by many reasons. When I was a high school student in China, the teachers never be late, and only few students late to school sometime.

Afghan women's rights By Cunle.yu

Summary: This is an article about Afghan women’s rights in their society. The author gave us a lot of examples about women to explain the traditional culture of afghan; women can’t talk with a man before them getting married. Women can not choose their husband by themselves; woman can’t go to college to learn what they are interest in. But a few Afghan women are against the tradition now.
Comments: I think the women in Afghan have no right that is not equal, they need to work, and they can not depend on men only. In ancient China, we did this to women too. But we found we were wrong, everybody has own rights, in new generation, women can go school, choose the man they love in China. An Afghan need to change a little, this is not a good traditional culture for their developing.

Under the Sign of Mickey Mouse & Co.(jaeman.myung)

America culture has been affected to the world. Anyone who lives in earth never can know Disney, coke jean, pop song. America’s entertainment is exporting as the form of movie, drama, talk show and not only entertainments but also American’s food style is exporting to the whole world. In the everywhere we go even poor countries and even communism countries, we can find coke, cookie, bread, hamburger and so on. American culture also has been affected to music, language parts. World official language became English a long time ago and everyone who wants to get office job is trying to learn English. I want to say, America culture is making Americanized the world. Even if we can’t figure out easily, we are being affecting America culture on our thinks, patterns of behavior from when we born in the earth. When we young, we saw Disney cartoon, When we adult, we see the Holly Wood movie and drink coke eat hamburger. What we eat, drink, see, wear is almost from America culture.

Why America Has To Be Fat.(jaeman.myung)

More than 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Here is question. Why America has so many overweight people? Writer finds reasons in the economic side. Today, America economic depends many part on the food. American economic can’t circulate without food. Because the economic system already has been adhere with fat food industries. These days we don’t need to farm potato to eat fried potato. We can eat just by going fast food store. Instead of working outside, now many people are working in the office with computer. So they don’t need to move much than before. Acting combined with fat food and lifestyle that don’t need to work physically caused overweight problem. Overweigh helps economic involved with diet, health food, hospital. People who has overweigh might try to diet or medical treatment. Like these, the answer of question ‘why have Americans become obese?’ is concerned economic. In the economic cycle which makes many of us have become fat, economic cater to what consumer want and consumer also cater to what economic makes well. I think, American should change their taste of food and more think deeply about their healthy to escape overweigh country. If people’s thinking change, economic will be changed in respond to what consumer want.

On My Road (Jaeman.myung)

In the text, the writer left quest-journey for feeling something that in the Kerouac novel. The Kerouac novel inspired to him and indirectly suggested the quest-journey. He experienced new and difference things and feelings before he never feel travel. First of all, he ride on the bus, heading to south, which Kerouac mentioned in the novel. But differently novel, the bus is not romantic but poor. People who couldn’t afford planes, trains, or cars were in the bus. Most of them were African-American. After he arrived at destination, he stayed with his great-uncle. His uncle asked to look at other side of America. Also, he met a scared teenage soldier in the bus terminal. He experienced two aspects of the America from soldier story who participated in a Vietnam war. What he felt and learned from the his quest-journey is America, which had felt like a foreign place seen from bus windows a few months before, looked familiar, smaller because now he can understand and recognize about different side of America he never had known. The America which seems to have only nice thing he expect was not whole America. The other side of America has many problems like racism, war, trouble with white and black. If he had not gone the travel, he might have known these kinds things. What the better than reading the books is experience yourself.

Some of the American cultures have been influenced the world` s culture. Which means that world’s cultures is Americanized now. In this article, the author Todd Gitlin mentions, “ Over the past twenty years American culture has been infiltrating nations all over the world, homogenizing traditional cultures into the kind of global fun culture that is Disney is famous for” according his thought, that the American mass media is not presented only for the United State. It is world` s culture now. He also mentions several cultures like the Hollywood, which is the global cultural capital especially the entertainment side film, TV, music, radio, and video games. Which means that is the very huge part if the American cultures that is the most influenced American cultures now. And one of the big parts was the food culture. McDonald is the most famous American food we can easily call. Big Mac is the very famous fast food in the world that has same tasty food wherever. According to his ideas, These cultures are not called American culture now we can call that is the world culture that we got from America. Which culture is the most influenced culture in the world.

through the freedom (Jin Huang)

Even you are living the most free country in the world, you still can’t have a freedom love, because you are an living with your own specialties culture.

This is my first image of this article. Two Afghanistan girls can’t dispute it , because it’s life. When you were born, it’s already decided everything for them. It’s hard to change.

In these years, though the 911 event and terrorism happens. The relation between America and Afghan is getting worse and worse. So it’s not easy for Afghanistan people to live with American culture.

Nowadays there are still a lot of women in the old time culture can’t have the normal education and can’t have a freedom love. Although all the world want change these unnaturally rule for women who in this situation. But why it doesn’t work?

I think because culture effects too much to the people who living in a religion country or who believe in an age-old religion.

This is hard to change, maybe only the time can make it on a different right way.

Under the sigh of Mickey Mouse (YU CHEN)

As we all known, American culture is the representative of playful, expressive, comfortable and uplifting thing. In the writer’s view, those aspects of American culture are so attractive to people in other countries. Those most famous are Mickey Mouse, Mcdonald’s and Hollywood. In my estimation, local culture can’t avoid being put away because of the culture strike of America. However, it’s not because it is America, it just because the tendency to the globalization. We should feel thankful that no matter what the American culture is, it mostly conveys the good morality. Like the writer said, American culture is “bottom-up” instead of “top-down”. Not only because the supply side wants more benefits, but also the people need more fun, need more entertainment to suffice their mental world, so demand side is also the crucial step of the globalization.
It is not that important and argumentative that should we keep us from the others’ cultures. The really matter thing is that do you have fun today.

Under the Sign of Mickey Mouse & Co.(Yilei Zhou)

Afghan woman in American culture(Cicely Li)

The article is about the two Afghans girl . Though they are in America, the country famous for freedom, they still love to obey the old rules in their culture. They married to the guys which their parents think better. But later, they are not sure if it is good. Finally, one of them get divorced.
In my opinion, your own culture is important, but now you are in another culture. You learn their culture. Later, you will change some part of your mind.None of the ideas of each culture is totally right. Maybe we should try to keep the advantages of your own culture and learn something good in the other cultures.

Afghan Women's Marriage Should Not be Confined (Zhen Fan )

“I’m very close to my family and that helps me because they want to do what’s best for me.” It may seems Afghan women are oppressed to us, but they may have an opposite vision. Living in Afghanistan, a country with traditional ideas, there is a different way and different opinion on happiness. It was a surprise when I saw this sentence in the article. Even many people outside Afghanistan think the same way, parents always do what is best for us, but we never let our parents to arrange our marriage. Parents are not choosing husbands for their daughters in fact. No doubt, they care their daughters’ happiness, but in the meanwhile, they are choosing guys who are capable to feed their daughters. It is true, economic foundation is important, but not the most. At least, love is not the thing included.

For me, Afghan women are treated as slaves. Their men release their anger by beating them. "Afghan people can't meet each other prior to getting engaged.” Everyone is blinded by arranged marriage. A gentle and apprehensive husband is the best thing ever in a woman’s life. How can we know if he is the one without meeting and hanging out with each other?

"There's a saying that the food your husband feeds you doesn't come for free. And men actually think they have a right under the Koran to beat their wives." This is weird anyhow in my mind. Love is not trading, we can never purchase love from anyone. We gain love when we give love. Love is a process of get and give, we are happy because we give, but not get. Overall, the living environment limits Afghans’ thoughts. When everyone is doing in the way with the culture of hundred years, how can we change it easily?

"When your actions are limited and you're from a certain world and you're young and you respect your family, you go along with their wishes even if you have extreme doubts." Arranged marriage seems more like a command rather than showing respect to family. Children will not refuse offers by parents, just because they think they cannot. However, parents’ happiness never equals to our happiness. It is not saying that we do not care about our parents. It is true, when our parents are happy, we are happy. Nevertheless, we have our own happiness, a part of happiness out of our own feelings, instead of the affection from parents.

"My mother still tells me she can't look at people because they know her daughter married in this way." It is very common to chose our own husbands, but strange for Afghans. Afghan women live in a country with a strong culture and traditions. It is not easy to be changed, but I hope someday, Afghan women can get their own part of happiness.

Under the sign of Mickey Mouse and Co. (Phuong Nguyen)

Globalized or Americanized? This problem is controversial problem. The article “Under the sign of Mickey Mouse and Co.” by Todd Gitlin discusses the problem and it encourages both sides.

First, the writer gives evidence to prove that the world is being Americanized. He mentions a Canadian educator’s theory in which the world is assumed a global village and it is American, “speaks American, wears jeans, drinks Coke, eats at the golden arches...” Gitlin also told a story about a champagne cellar in France. Although the cellar was dedicated by Marie Antoinette – the Queen of France and Navarre, all the pictures in the cellar were of famous Hollywood stars drinking champagne. In addition, the writer claimed that “French resentment of American civilization is well known”, however, American movies still sold tons of tickets in France. Young filmmakers all over the world want to “become the next Steven Spielberg or George Lucas”, who are very famous Hollywood directors. Gitlin also explains why American culture is so popular. It is different from others such as British, Soviet culture. While British model was classbound and Soviet was mainly didactic, American culture is to entertain the common man and woman, it’s not aristocratic. They cultivated “popularity, not elevation; fun, not refinement”. The most typical and famous model for this statement are Disneyland and Hollywood. In Hollywood movies, actions are always very expressive; speech is the second mode of expression, which makes those movies more interesting. Another reason why the world is being Americanized is features of American English. It’s “compressed, pungent, informal, absorptive, evolving, precise, transferable between written and verbal form…”

Gitlin also supports the idea that America is being globalized. No one could say what American culture exactly is. It is a blend of Europe’s and Africa’s culture. Moreover, it continues to accept almost any input. Materials in American products are international. For example, Disney used tales from Britain, Germany, Italy… Hollywood uses capital, hires personnel and depicts sites from many different parts in the world. American music is also a mix of different kinds of music such as Jamaican ska, rap…

In my opinion, both the world and the USA are being affected by each other. The USA seeks for inspiration from all around the world to put into their products, which is known as globalized. This makes the US entertainment production more interesting to foreigners. Therefore, people all around the world accept America’s products more easily. Then, the world is Americanized.

There is no doubt that the world is being Americanized and vice versa, but is this trend never going to change?

The change of Afghan Women(Man Chan)

summary
This story talks about the marriage culture about the Afghan Women. A lot of Afghan Women didn't have the right to choose their husbands. They just choosing their husbands by following their parents. Now, that culture has a little change. A few of them didn't following their tradition. They were choosing their husbands by themselves.

Comment
I think i didn't have the right to say that culture is good or bad. I can only think this culture is good at some way, like parents will help their daughter to choosing the husbands that can give them a comfortable life, but on the other side, there also have some bad thing, maybe something some parents will sell their daughter as property.
I think this culture will change. Just like China, in the old time, Women didn't have right to choose husbands, but now, they are free to choose their own husbands that they think is suit for them.

How to choose a husband? (Yuehua Jin)

According the article talks about "how to choose a husband". The article gave some examples to talk about different countries and culture have different ways to choose a husband. For example: Afghan women have to linten to her parents to choose a husband, otherwise it will ba an ambarrassment for her family.

Marriage is a big issue. How to choose a huaband is very important. I think I will listen to my parents, because they have many life experiences, they can give me good suggestion and help me how to choose a good husband.

"My mother still tell me she can't look at people because they know her daughter married to a man she chose on her own." I can't say it was right or wrong, I think it just really special culture.

Under the Sign of Mickey Mouse & Co.(Lingli Huang)

With the development of technology and economy, the communication betweent different countries and cultuers is much easier than before. On the other hand, we can say thye world become "smaller". It is a "global village". In a country we can find not only one cultuer there. Mickey Mouse and coke have become the symbol of America culture. America culture has a strong infectivity. It is easy to find in many other countries such as Hollywood, coke, fast food, Disneyland and so on. It fuses with the local culture well.
America and its culture is complicated. It is difficult to say the world is Americanied. Because America is a emigratory country. America culture is based on and mixed with many different cultures. In America we can find there are exsist many cultures no matter it was there before or it just appeal. Hollywood is an important part of America culture, it appeals to many countries, many people love it. But it is easy to find Chinese or the other countries' elements there. Such Jackie Chan, Chinese Kongfu. America fast food is famous in the world. Almost every country has American fast food such as McDonald's. But we can also find many Chinese resturant, Japanese resturant in America. So cultures begin to affect each others.

Under the sign of Mickey Mouse and company(shengming jin)

A cultural invasion from American is a argument of Gitlin's article. The culture of food and American products become the main trend in the world today, all people in the world become American. American culture has become something of a standard around the world. I think it’s not only American culture standard around the world, more like the culture mix. People like the new and fashion things. American good at make the brand, like Disney and Mcdownload. American good at make this thing famous all over the world. These things become famous. There is something especial and Benefit. Now, the planet we live more like global village, Exchange information are very fast and convenes. The level of Technological and living of each country are being synchronized. The entire world becomes more advanced. For example, some western festival, like Christmas and thanksgiving. Some eastern countries people also celebrate for this kind of festival. And some west countries also started to touch the other culture, like Asian food and languages. The world become more communication. Because this kind of communication, the different cultures mix together and create a new culture and way which is fit for all people. Although all over the world is infiltrated by American culture. But they still want to keep some traditional things and spread and good things to other countries, like the traditional food. So this isn’t only cultural invasion, also communicate and compromises the benefits of different cultures.

Under the sign of Mickey Mouse & Co. (Anthimos Michael)

Many argue if the world is becoming Americanized, or if America is becoming globalized. There are many opinions that support both ideas. In this article, we can see that throughout the world the American culture changed us. American culture has reach us through the films, music, clothes, media etc. Everybody knows popular Hollywood stars, pop singers, even famous cartoon heroes. People seeing these stars , try to look like them, dress like them, act like them therefore trying to be american. English language helped this effect because it is the international language. In addition the American fast food is all over the world. Even drinking Coke is a part of the American culture. It's a form of identity and recognition.

The different culture on marriage (Shota Takemura)

Summary

This article is about marriage under the different culture. As an example, the case of a woman from Afganistan is raised.
She lives in U.S. And, she got married with American. She chose that man by herself. But, her parents refused it, because in Afganistan, woman's marriage should be decided by their parents. Their marriage is not only for women, but also for a whole family.

Comment

In Japan, a long time ago, women couldn't decide their marriage by their selves. Husband should be chosen by women's family.
Women didn't have the right to choose husband and state their opinion. They were looked down by people, especially men. I strongly think women should decide their husband by their selves like nowadays in Japan.

About Femail Rights in Afghan (Hyungmin Kim)

This article is about the Afghan lady getting married with a person in Afghan culture.

She accepts her destiny and she gets married and obey her husband.

Personal commants:

As a man for myself I agree with this system. I always wanted my wife to be like the woman in

the article but, I admit that this kind of thinking is conservative and not fair for woman.

The last day of this weekend. (Jeeyun Choi)

I think the last week days were pretty hard time for me, because I took two tests, especially first one was the test for my major course. That was stressful and I got pressure due to that. Anyway, I finished all tests last week and I enjoyed playing basket ball. That was good, but now I have a troulbe to concentrated to something. I have no idea. I still have a lot of things to do, but everything became annoyed for me now. I think I need to divert to my mind. I am wondering whether all class mates have great weekend or not. Have a good evening and See you class in tomorrow.

Unequal treatment of the Afghan women(Chen Zhao)

Summary: This atricle it's talking about the sexual discrimination of Afghan, it shows us that in Afghan, they think women are second-class citizens, then women in Afghan can't pick their spouses by themself, and most of them can't go to school and work, their role is set and they were told what they could and couldn't do.

Comment: This atricle shows us that the big difference about women's position between the America and Afghan, Even the Afghan girls are in the NewYork, they wear the modern clothes, looks like modern American women, but in their notion, they have to comply with the role of Afghan women.

Theme for English B (Jee Yun Choi)

The backgrund of this poet is pretty old history in the U.S. society. At that time, it was really common to discriminate between white and black people. Even the white did not want to live with the other races. "Harlem" is one of the most famous place for black people. In the article, the author attended to the school which was almost studied by white students, so he felt segregation contrasted to the other student in that he was only colored student. Even I think he discriminated him by himself due to the atmosphere of society at that time.
He is wondering about who the American is. He want to be same level as an the Aemrican and unify all of the people. He want to do all of regular behaviors like any other white people. He is, however, disappointed, because real situatuib is totally different. That is why he just mentioned about his hope at the last part.

why there is a unequal society in Afghan?(shengwei tao)

In this article, it write about a Journalist immigrated to New York city, after the second world war. And the majority of point is Afghan woman is not equal to man in her society, even they immigrated to New York.
from this sentence " there's a saying that the food your husband feeds you doesn't come for free". It makes me laughing, because it indicates an unequal society in Afghan, although it is the tranditional curtural in Afghan. But from my point of view, I disagree that woman are treated like dogs in her society.

Under the Sign of Mickey Mouse & Co.(Jee Yun Choi)

The world is really americanized, because the daily life of many people in the world is related with the American culture. They always can see and feel that anywhere. If they have to live without this culture, they would have some troubles to live in their country.
That means that the people's life in the world belongs to the American culture very much. Thanks to the Hollywood movie, the American culture can be spread easily. Many people can watch their life style and their clothes, so they become following and imitating their culture. We used to eat McDonald's food and Coca cola is really familiar. All people can remind Levi's jean as the most common brand for jeans. James Dean or Michael Jackson is the stars of all over the world and Mickey mouse is rally familar to the everyone including adults.

Choosing clothes, but not husbands (Hoang Dinh)

“Choosing clothes, but not husbands” - This short story is about the woman in Afghanistan, who can’t be the one to decide for their own marriage life. It’s not a new topic, but it has been what people kept discussing for a very long time. With a feudal systems in mind, people in these country believed in arranged marriage, and woman doesn’t have any right to choose her husbands on her own. The world is becoming moderner, women everywhere is having a demonstration about equal right, but even somewhere in New York, the capital of the world, some women still couldn’t be with the person she loves. To be fair, this matter may vary upon each individual, some can feel satisfied listening to her parents, as they are more experienced and may know what’s good for their child. Marriage is a lifetime decision and a woman may have to sacrifices a lot to please their parent’s decision. One of the examples of this was Ms. Naderi. Ironically, she married to the man she shoes on her own, which makes her mom and her grandma not speak to her for ten years. “My mother still tell me that she can’t look at people because they know her daughter married in this way” said Ms. Naderi. It just sounds really sad to me, and in the end, I blame i on the society. It’s so outdated that it has put so much pressure on the reputation of the family, leading to all this tragic situation.

Hoang Dinh,

Afghan women's marrige (Dun Gong)

Summary:
The Afghan culture is different from American culture in choose husbands. The female are not allowed to talk and play games with guys when they were young. Their culture requires the female to be loyal to marriage. Some Afghan moved to New York, they keep their tradition in their life. The Afghan spirit is still keep on, especially in their marriage, no divorce, be loyal and glory of the family.
Comments:
It is unfair for Afghan women to follow their parents’ choice of their husbands. Because they need to consider about the glory of the family, they cannot choose what kind of men that they want.

So this isn’t only cultural invasion, also communicate and compromise the benefits of different cultures.

A Woman Can Do It as a Man (Duekhyun Kim)

This story is about Afghan women. Among the Afghan cultures, there is patrachal culture. For example, Afghan women do not choose their husband. They have to wait for their husband until their family decide their husband. If women get married by their own mind, the women and their family receive irreconcilble stature.

My comments: I think patriachal culture is incongruity on nowadays. All Women in this world can get a job, an education, and choose husband by themselves. However, some special women such as Afghan women, can not do whatever they want, that does not make sense. Men have a their own right but women also have it. Women are only weaker animally than men, women can as men as do any tasks. Nowadays, woman's power is increasing as a man. Therefore, the Afghan culture have to change equally between women and men.

The world should not exist unfair (Xing.Pan)

This article writes about a woman come from Republic of Afghanistan. She doesn’t have the human rights same as the other women of Afghanistan. Afghanistan has a patriarchal culture and they can't talk about boys and go to school or work. They can marry, but just not to someone they choose. In other words, man and woman are not equal such as that woman can select the clothes.
I think of the China in old society, the man and woman are not equal and the woman didn’t have human rights, the women’s marriage must abide by parents. Now the Afghanistan still not getting rid of it. In my opinion, I think it’s bed and the man and woman are alike and live in same world. Similarly, woman also can aspire the uncontrolled marriage. The world should not exist unfair. similarly, the marriage should not exist unfair unless they are gay!!

We want to choose whatever we want (Yuhui Li)

Afghanistan has a patriarchal culture and women do not have rights. They can't talkto boys and go to school or work."
It's been drilled into your head since you were a little girl: 'Don't talk with guys, don't ruin your reputation, everyone will gossip about you." I think it is so bad for afghanistan women because it is not equal . Everyone have their own rights either men or women. They can do something they want. Nobody want to be limited but women have no rights in afghanistan. " Even today, some families insist that girls, whose non-Afghan friends roam freely, return home immediately after school. It is not uncommon for girls to be engaged as young as 13 and be married by 16. " This is a big tragedy for them. They want to be free but women not equal to men in Afghanistan, they must follow the rules. I think everyone have rights in this world ,because we are all people.

Is it a shame to choose own husband for Afghan woman? (Yang Li)

The traditional marriage in Afghanistan is pretty interesting. In the article, two Afghans women live in Flushing, Queens, they are waiting for their parents to pick their spouses. They go to college to prusue proffessions. In Afghan marriage, the parents often arrange their daughters' marrage. In Afghan conventions if a girl pick her husbands by herself, she would become a discredit to her family. Also, nothing would stop gossip. The honor of her family would be broken. Anyway, the womanhoods don't have enough rights for their patriarchal culture eventhough their politics try to change the situation.
The Afghan culture seems ironclad. The women's rights of marriage and work are limited. The partiarchal culture sustain remnants. In my opinion, the marriage is so important to girl's life. Girl should choose husband by herself. It's pity that the marriage is controlled by the parents and to see the future husband several times then getting marry. Meanwhile, woman should work harder than the man for the rights.
Quote:
Some Afghan Muslims who have been here for decades are so acculturated they put up Christmas trees, but in general Afghans here are trying to sustain crucial remnants of their culture.(paragraph 3, 2nd sentences,p226)
Much of that stigma derives from the treasured principle of family honor. If a daughter chooses to find her own spounse, her father's stature will be diminished, the family name tainted by gossip, and her sisters may find it harder to marry. (paragraph11, p226 )

(Chao Zhou)

Everone has a vanity, but the manifestations are differents. Probably because buys more like the mother, I am a born shopaholci, buying my favorite things can make me feel happly. Everything happens for a reason, attract people.
When I was in primary school, because I like a girl in my class, and she likes soccer, and then I joined the soccer team, although my health is poor at that time, so I kicked the ball for 10 years.
She and me went to the same high school, and the same as the original, I joined the school team, she never missed my game untill she left me. When I graduated from high school, my best friend told me that the time which in the sprots arena to attract the girls are gone. I also know that she and soccer has already left my life. I need to purse another life, in this way, I become a person who hate myself.

Nonsense convention about women in Afghan (Sunkyung Yoo)

A stroy about Afghan women's culture. In Afghan, they have their own culture about women. Women from Afghan usually cannot get an education and should follow thier parents' decisions when choosing husband, instead of choosing by themselves. However, in Flushing, there are many refugee people, who from Afghan. They want to keep their own culture about women. There are several controversial opinions about women, such as no working, no school, an no marry freely.
Comments: I think it does not make sense at all. Nowadays, all people have equal right whether women or older people. Even though Afghan has their own culture, it is pattiarchal and old thinking. People should change. Most people who had right education have to help Afghan women to get rid of their old convention.

Under the Sign of Mickey Mouse & Co.(mengjing yang)

The world is like global village. It is found with many kinds of culture. Hollywood is also. The cultures are from all over the world. It got the most interesting parts of their cultures. That’s the reason why it is successful. America popular culture is close to the global village culture. It made with so many kinds of elements. They share their dreams, their hopes, powers even weather here. Hollywood is a part of American culture. It gets all the advantages from others, like Hong Kong movies, Japan movies. It’s successful and consequential.
Why it is so successful, because it got lots of supply sides. No matter economies or cultures. Now, foreign markets also depend on American formulas, like westerns, action heroes, rock music, and hip-hop. But they just copy for each other. Still didn’t get anything new. So they can exceed Hollywood and American entertainment.
Not only the supply side. Here still has demand side. But it won’t suffice to explain global culture. American popular culture isn’t uniquely formulaic or transportable. Let’s think about how many possible resources are helpful. Like ads, new subjects.
However, we should stay on our culture and get some advantage from others, not just copy without thinking. Try to get some new ideas and we could be better.

This article talks about two afghan womans who live in america. both of them go to collage. also both of them are fighting with afghan culture rules. for example they do not have to choose their husband by theirself. is the duty ogf the family to choose their future husband. so the first thing the problem of marriage. after this they are not allowed to see their future husbands before they get married.for afghan people girl is the trophy piece and if they get divorced is shameful for the family.they do not have reasons to get divorced.for them the stigma dervies from the treasured principle of family honor.also another issue exist in their education, they only have to read the kuran and if they go to school they have to come back immidiately after finishing it.also afghan culture is patriarchal, womans do not have right they are the second class, they are out of sight.
From my point of view they have to change some rules of their culture because people are pressed ,not free such as to go to school or to choose their future husband or even if the marriage does not goes in the right way they can not be divorced for no reason.
tu sum up if i were in place of these girls i will struggle a lot to have my rights because every person have the right to live the life how he or she wants.also reading the tittle we can understand that something does not go in the right way because why we can choose clothes wich are things that we change every day ,but not ower future husband.it is not fair.

Why American has to be fat(Haiou Chu)

To be honest, I have to say I felt unbelieveble after I read the article. The main point of this article is talk about the connection between American people who are fat and the increase of economic.
I never think about this before. People are more overweight, the industries will earn more money and get more profits. Even if you are not too fat, you want to keep fit, you also involvod the commercial circle. They provide healthy treatments and books to the people who only want to keep fit. Following with the development oftecnology, people prefer likt to stay at home, more and more famalies they choose restaurants or frozen foods as their meals. The fast and junk foods you eat more and more, you will be more and more overweight. In the meanwhile, the businessmen get more money.
Maybe, we can suppose the industries give you two sids for choose. One is be fatter, they can earn money. On the other hand, they told you that you should be health, and they have new foods which are more healthy and natural. However, anyway, you will be their resource for benefits.

Lonely new year again (YiLei Zhou)

"Miss my family, during the festival season" this is the Chinese proverbs sentence. this is my fourth year spent the spring festival without my family and outside of home. Get together with family, eating togerther, and wear new clothes, these are Chinese culture. I cant feel this, because I am in outside of my hometown. I was cried, when mum said : family was get together this year, just beside you.

Why America has to be fat? (YiLei Zhou)

In the big city, people getting fater and fater, because follow the economic, the steps of people will fater. people who work in Manhattan or somebig place, they have no time to eat real food. M ,KFC or Subway are good for them. one sandwich plus one cup of soda maybe is the lunch for them.

why American has to be fat(mengjing yang)

The article tells us why America has to be fat. The author is at and more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. The first reason is they like to eat fast food, something like potato chips. And they eat them up; they don’t like to do sport. They become lazy. American cost o lot of money on the juke food. They always drive instead of walking. And most building have elevator. They don’t need walk to much. In the part time, the people become more lazy. They didn’t do any exercise at all. Nowadays we can buy cooked in any store. At the end of story, they built a company to solve this problem.

The story of this week (Jin Liu)

This week, we encountered a heavy snow, on the outside scenery is very beautiful. But our lives have become inconvenient. This Saturday is the traditional Chinese holidays - Spring Festival.
Our school's Chinese students are looking forward to this day, but it is difficult to feel the festive atmosphere.Yesterday we also went to Flushing, bought a lot of vegetables, we have prepared a lot of traditional food, such as dumplings, braised fish, we also burned Pork. At the same time, he also studied the fast-food,In his view, the emergence of these fast food also contributed to the American people become fat. But, have to say, because the U.S. economic growth is to rely on the catering industry, and therefore economic growth needs these people.

Chinese new year( Chao Zhou)

The annual Chinese New Year is coming, this is my second New Year outside of my hometown, the day before yesterday is the New Year's Eve, I didn't go to sleep until 7 am, because I must call my family, at that moment my family was having dinner together, my grandfather's health is poor, but I can't accompany him. A simple greeting can makes me with mixed feelings.
Yesterday, my friends and I went to KTV with diferents moods and intens, some in order to sing, some to drink, and some for girls. Time always flies quickly, unconsciously we played to 4:00 am. The empty bottles on the table, the garbage on the ground, and people who were lying on the sofa, under the influence of alcohol, everything seemed so unreal. Wine is real a good thing, it can promote friendship, forget their troubles. This scence looks chaotic, but very real. Are we control the life of the life enslave us?It seems that I'm really drunk.

Why America has to be fat (Phuong Nguyen)

The article “Why America has to be fat” by Michael S. Rosenwald discusses reasons for American’s obesity. The main point is that America’s economy need American to be fat so that firms can make profit. It is said that “a lot of money is being made, and to be made, in feeding.” Therefore, in those industries, the future of those firms depends on prevalence of obesity.

Specifically, there are three reasons for the problem. First of all, changes in the workplace make people to burn fewer calories. People don’t have to do so much manual work as before. Second, people don’t want to give up their free time nor pay to exercise. Third, advances in technology provide shorter time to prepare and consume food. All these factors make America fatter and fatter.

The writer also points out some economic costs of the issue. It could bankrupt the health insurance industry, so the burden would fall on US firms and American taxpayers. The most important, “shorter life spans will more quickly take millions of educated people out of the workforce.”

The article points out a very hot problem at present as well as a surprising reason for it. It makes people to think about the issue from a new and interesting perspective.

Chao Zhou

Now days, moore American get farter and farter, one reason is that the U.S economic growth is too fast. The living environment changes alot, people work for a long time, life has given people lots of pressure, they have no time to have a healthy lunch, and then they buy fast food. Every one know that fast food contains a mass of calories, the fast food is not healthy for humans.
Another reason is the transport, more and more people have their presonal cars, they drive car to everywhere. America is a big country, the distance between city and city is far. people have to drive the car to visit. People have no free time to do sports. Science and technology is keeping developing, a variety of machines in place of a lot of manpower, it's seems that it's easy than before, but long-term face of computer is harmful.
America is a real developed country, time always goes fast, a country can become richer and richer, this requires that people continued to work, so people need more energy, that's why American have to get fater and fater.

Why America Has To Be Fat (Anthimos Michael)

The article "Why America hats to be fat" is about the increased population of America that are fat, about 60%, and what causes this. Obesity in America is becoming the first society killer. As technological improvements greatly rose after World War II in the food industries, the companies have found ways to allure the consumers to buy and consume their products. As these companies constantly produce what people need, and improve the efficiency of their products. People tend to eat more calories that they burn, making them overweight.
As people learn to spend their free tune watching TV or other activities that don't include exercise in them, they don't burn the calories they eat. No one wants to spend his leisure time exercising and at work few things demand physical activity. People in the 1950's had jobs that demanded more physical activity making them thinner than people today.
The food companies make million of dollars producing these fast foods as people tend to not cook anymore, therefore these products are ideal for Americans. The role of women also played a significant role as women now work the same hours as men and do not have the time to cook 2 hour meals. The economy of America needs the Americans to be fat, the food companies make money out of it. Also people promising fat people that by buying their books, guides and visiting the gym will make them thin again make money also. Its a process that these people take advantage of the fast paced life we live today. Therefore is the title of the article "Why America has to be fat".

Why America Has to Be Fat(YunZhen LI)

The article"Why America Has to Be Fat" by Michael S. Roserwald is very special on tis way to show the author's opinion.
The author use a lot of time to describe the statement of Americans themselves. And yes, the truth is, many Americans are fat.
As the author's word, "In many ways, my being fat alse makes me preety good for the economy". The main idea he want to say is not about their bodies, but the situation of American economic.
That means, American has to be fat to cosume more to support Amrican economic. Fat people always eat more than others, they have to pay more on food. From another view, fat people need to pay for health project which may keep them healthy but cost more. Fat people always do less, they need high technoledge to make their live better. All of these things make American economic get more profit. Without fat people, American economic may run a very hard way.
However, the author has the hope to improve the profit of American economic by use the way to throw some useless investment and cost, but not from the help of fat comsumers.
By his way, it not only can make Americans more healthy, but also make Amrican Economic better.

who is the family broker? (shengwei tao)

From this article, the author Sarah invited her dad and mom to come to New York City to celebrate great thanksgiving. Before her parents had never accepted her inviting and had never to New York. Her parents come from Mississippi; I think it is first time to have thanksgiving together when Sarah came to New York.

Also Sarah invited her sister Amy and her sister son Owen, in the thanksgiving, Amy and Sarah cooking dinner, and her parents take Owen to see Macy’s parade. Sarah has invited her friends John and David to join them for dinner. After several days, Sarah parents go to shopping, Amy and Owen goes to visit Museum, Empire State Building. When they on the top of the Empire State Building and they wished they were home, which indicated her parents and her sister wanted to go back to own home and didn’t want to stay New York.

In my opinion, thanksgiving in American liked spring festival in china, it is symbolized a family. But in American people have distant relationship among family members, unlike china where, every family members wished to together in the spring festival, in American family, they didn’t want to be together at all

On my road (Jeeyun Choi)

In 1964, there were many movements which was related with discrimination between the people, especially segregation. It used to be done someone's dead like John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr.. The main character also lived in that period, so he seems that he really wanted to figure out some kind of solution as a college student in the US. First, he chose the bus as a transportation for the poor. Even though he was white person, he really felt that there were something wrong about opportunity or right of people. He used to read books on the bus during the trip. "The books: Thorean's "walden." Dickinson's poem, whitman's "specimen Days" and Jack Kerouac's "on the road." These all are related with discrimination.

The first Thanksgiving Day( Man Chan )

Summary
This story is talking about a family share their ime in New York. Sarah Vowell invite her family to go to New York. Sarah is talking about what they do and what they thinking when they are sharing their time on the Thanksgiving holiday.
Comment
I think that people usually share their time in holiday. Everyone didn't want to share the time with anyone. Just like me, if today is holiday, i will expected to stay home alone. It is more free for me. I can do anything that i want to do in that day. Now, people expected a free time. They work hard in the normal day. They just want to relax when they are free. I think in this story. Going away from your family is a good thing. That will let you have no need to spend more time with your family in holiday.

The Thanks Giving. Shota Takemura

This story is about a family on Thanks Giving Day. The writer invites her parents to come to her house in NY. However, their relationship is not good. They usually don't talk much. and, it's common for them to spend that time separately. The last year, they watched movies to kill the time to talk with each other. But, this year, they can't go to see the movie because her sister brings her son. Thanks to him, they don't need to feel uncomfortable.

In Japan, we don't have the Thanks Giving Day. But, we meet together on the New Year's Day. I think we need the opportunity to meet together a year because if we live separately, we can't know the current situation of each other.

Summary: The First Thanksgiving Day (Dun Gong)

Summary of the First Thanksgiving
One day, the writer invited her family to spend the Thanksgiving Day in her home. Her parents, sister and nephew were come to visit her, and it was unexpected. Quote:
The thing that unites us is that all four of us are homebody claustrophobe who prefer to be alone and suspicious of other people.

My first thanksgiving

She invited her parents to new york to spend thanksgiving. She was terrified. Her family did something together and individually too. She liked her family because there are some kind of distance like they do not talk too much even previous holiday.

I feel tired, sad and exhausted cause I cried over phone last night. I miss my mom, father and even my younger brother. We are very tight related family. Back in Korea, I live in 22nd floor, my uncle who is younger brother of my mom, this family live at 5th floor at the same building and my another uncle, his family live at the building where in front of ours.
we always have family gathering dinner at every Saturday, and on holidays we all go to our grand father's house. We all know about each other and we are not afraid or uncomfortable about sharing our thought and information

But in this article, I like about claustrophobes because sometimes you need your own space to think and to breathe. In relationship, sometimes it is good strategy to move back a little to stay in a constance relationship.

The First Thanksgiving (Yang Li)

The writer invited her family members to come to New York for the thanksgiving, eventhough she didn't expect them to really come. Before at thanksgiving they usually go to see movies in order to avoid communicating with her parents. However her sister's baby, Owen, bring them more fun. The feeling of boring decreased. They did their own things individually. Her sister and she cooked dinner but her mother didn't like her cornbread. Finally, they went to the Empire State Building together.

In my opinion, the article is a little bit boring. They stay with each other but the communication between them is not enough. The writer was afraid to stay with her family closely. They left their grandfather to a new city. Every generation moves away with lonesome. Anyway, at present, the baby Owen help them unit together and bring fun, interesting. They should talk a lot and take care of each other rather than enhance the distance. People should be independent when she or he lives alones in a strange city but sometimes people can perform naturelly or freely in front of the parents.

The First Thanksgiving! Yuehua jin (Yolanda)

According to the article talks about that Sarah invited her parents come to New York City to have Thanksgiving at her house, but she was terrified they wouldn’t have enough to talk about. In the past, they usually went to the movies instead talking to each other. But her sister, is coming and brings her seven-mouth-old son, so the cinema’s not an option
In my opinion, they try to live together, but it is very hard for them. Actually, it is kind of modern family or part of modern life.
The last paragraph said:” My sister wishes she were at home. My mom and dad wish they were home. I wish they were home too.” It is so funny sentence. It sounds like joking, but that is her really thought. I think it’s not whose fault, nobody was wrong in the family. It just every family has themselves life styles.

On my road (Phuong Nguyen - Fee Fee)

The memoir “On my road” by Holland Cotter tells what and how the writer saw the world during and after a bus trip from Boston to Texas. At first, he said that he was going to visit his friend in a reform school in Austin, Texas. However, the main purpose of the young man was to know more about the USA, especially the things that he would never see in his place. He chose bus for the trip. He brought with him a lot of novels and a “romantic view of bus travel” because a character in his favorite book “On the road” came to New York City with his teenage wife. Ironically, he soon found out that buses were the transportation for poor people, especially black people. It was June of 1964 when Cotter started his trip; the whole country was heated up by Kennedy’s assassination and the Vietnam War. It was a good chance for him to realize that reality is not as romantic as novels.

Things that he saw during the trip supported the idea more strongly. As he went south, he gradually realized the gap between the white and the black. First, he was told about “apartheid”. Although he was “immersed in African America”, which was meant by pop culture, he was still a white guy living in such a place that there was hardly a black person. People in his place tried to ignore the issue, that’s why he couldn’t have any idea about it. The second thing that he saw was poverty of black people in North Carolina. He was also very surprised when knowing about the disappearance of 3 civil-rights workers, two of them white and from the North. Then, he knew that the white were not welcomed there, even if they were “civil-rights workers”. Next, he went to Atlanta, where he witnessed racial discrimination at another level. Restaurants had side windows to serve black, drinking fountains were labeled “black” and “white”. There, discrimination was public. No one protested against it, no one could protest against it. On the trip, he met a “scared teenage soldier” on the way from his home to his base then on to Vietnam. However, the young soldier didn’t know anything about the war. Neither did Americans.

After the trip, Cotter changed his viewpoints to his favorite novels. He realized their descriptions of African-Americans “seemed cartoonish, false, often mean” because they were written by white Americans. New experience that he gained during the trip made him much more knowledgeable and helped him see the country more familiar. Then he decided to read less and discover the world by his own eyes and ears. Finally, he chose art to be his thing, but he reflected reality in his works and didn’t include any “color lines”.

The trip totally changed Cotter’s perspectives and viewpoints about the world. It even helped him figure out which way he should go for the rest of his life. I always believed that the more we go, the more mature we can be and that’s definitely true in Cotter’s case. The youth should go as much as possible, to learn and discover the world, societies and the life.

The first Thanksgiving Day(cunle.yu)

The first Thanksgiving Day

The writer invited her family to enjoy the Thanksgiving Day together in New York. There are a lot of details about the relationship with her family. They don’t go well with each other. They don’t have common topics to talk, they don’t want to, so they move the point to movie or the baby. This article tells us the story about the family’s relationship.
Comments: I don’t think the family created a great relationship with each other. I think they don’t really love each other, why they have nothing to talk, and they don’t want to try it. I usually spend hours to talk with my family. We care about each other, but the writer’s family doesn't. I don’t think they hate each other, but there is no love in them like strangers. The writer is painful; she wants get something like other family.

Hi,guys (Shengming Jin)

My name is Shengming Jin, you can call me Jin if don't know how pronounce my name. i am come form China, it's my frist bolg post. i am nevrous, don konw what should i say. hope we can become the best firend, let's share happiness and sweat this semester. Have a perfect semester.

on my way (Yu Chen)

From this article, we can know and feel another real American through the alone journey. The writer was intended to visit his friend who was in a reform school. Though he didn’t visit his friend because of same reason, it doesn’t matter. Because he feel a very different America, compared with Boston.
He chose bus as his main transportation, because bus can represent poor people’s daily life, instead of trains or cars. On his road, he saw the discrimination to African-American and he also saw such poverty which he had never seen. Finally, he even started doubting that if he traveled the same country. He said that America looked familiar, smaller. It means that the America he used to live in is not the whole and real America. Paying attention to both: black and white, the poor and the rich can make you feel this is the real America.
In my own view, real America is a society with diversity. Not only can should we see the Big Apple (New York), but also should notice the poverty, the whole America, not a half.

The First Thanksgiving (Hyungmin Kim)

For thanksgiving Sarah's family visit Sarah in New York. Sarah is a very depressed person and

she does not get along well with her family. As usual her family arrives at her place and have

problems as usual. Sarah's mother seems not fully grown up person. Because after the

sightseeing she comes back home and says she is not sure when she is going to visit Sarah.

Sarah's father seems very tough person. Not very tough but he seems very quite and control his

family. Sarah does not welcom her family except her nephew. Sarah's mother seems she

doesn't like New York much because her comments about coming back to New York is not

sure. However at the end all family visit empire state building and they decide to walk stairs up

instead of taking an elevator. Finally, in a very tired situation because of walking up the stairs all

family's think get connected in to one idea. Personal coments about this story is: I think this is a

very sad story because famiy members in this story seem not vey close to each other. I was

born in very friendly and happy family so I do not understand Sarah's family much. But I see

some families around me and I know several worse than Sarah's.

The Frist Thanksgiving (Xing.Pan)

Sarah Vowell’s description of her first experience hosting Thanksgiving paints
an amusing and touching portrait of her relationship with her family. She invited his parents to come to nyc to have Thanksgiving, she expected them to say yes, however they really come and come with my sister and her son. Because before everyone of her family lived a each life, so there are some happen on this thanksgiving such as cook dinner and trip and sense and so on. Author used many interested words and sentences to represent the especial relationship among her family.
To make a general survey of whole article, Sarah Vowell just want to have a normal family life and she doesn’t want to close them, actually they also think so. But since a invite by author to change the Thanksgiving thoroughly. From the last sentence of the article “My sister wishes she were home. My mom and dad wish there were home. I wish they were home too”, It indicates that they also didn’t enjoy the Thanksgiving and they want to have their each life.
I had a bittersweet feeling when I finished my reading, I have nothing to say on this article, because it isn’t used to be on China. I think it’s a negative case, but author used the humorous way to relate the story. There have so many humorous words within the article that it can attract the interest of reader to read.

The first thanksgiving

The First Thanksgiving (Yichen Wang)

The writer gave the experience about having Thanksgiving with her strange family members first time in New York City.
At the begining, the writer was to conflict with her parents on mental. They did not want to talk to each other. I do not think it is correct for family relationship, but I can understand the writer. Parents are the older generation, they often think so different with their offsprings, they have their own life style, they are oldschool, there are so many topics we must avoid. Otherwaise, there is an arguement is waiting for us.
After that, the writer's sister brought her son to come with her. That means the writer cannot avoid to talk with her family anymore. Then, they found fun between the time they live together. I think that was great . Because avoiding to communicate is not a good idea for family menbership, try to communicate with others can eliminate the misunderstanding.
Finally, something happened that change the situation. The nephew started to cry out and embarrassment appeared again. Every one in the writers family were so regret that they come to have the Thanksgiving together. In my opinion, the membership is so sick! What the family are? The last position of people's emotion, the harbour for souls' rest. What happend on them? They even try to avoiding meeting each others!
In modern city, less traditional views is kept, more and more people give up their families. They argue for benefit, they fight for themselves. The modern society is so bloodiness and only the religion faith can save the people I think.

First Thanksgiving Ryuhei Yoshida

Through the experience of thanksgiving which her family first come to NY, a writer feel uncomfortable and also think about where she is in her life. She likes her family but doesn't like spend a time with them. They have same disease which define them as a family. Then they find out what their family is.

I think this isn't typical type of family strongly think they are new kind of modern family; do not depend on each other.
Nowadays, There are many nuclear family and they don't meet their parents for a long time. I think family should meet frequently. If they are a family, they don't need to meet in compulsion. They meet whenever they want. If they don't want to, they can stay separately.Family make people feeling free.

The First Thanksgiving.(Duekhyun Kim)

This story is about a strange family. Her parents have never visited their daughter’s home in New York. Whenever she visited parent’s home, they always watched movies whole days. After watching movie, there was only family time when they could talk with each other about the contents of the movies. To her surprise, her parents visited her house with her sister on this Thanksgiving. Despite they came to New York, they stayed in hotel. Also they could not watch the movie like before because of her sister’s baby. For these reasons, they did something separately every day. One day, they went to Empire states Building. They stood, side by side, and then they thought with each other that they wanted to go back home because there was dark, cold and windy. She realized for the first time they are family after sharing this thought.

In my opinion, this family is unfamiliar with each other. They did not talk about anything, and they did something separately on Thanksgiving Day. They look like negative attitude. However, they have similar personality. It makes them think they are family. I would like to come up with trying conversation each other and living together with warm heart. Also they have to prohibit watching movies. Even if they don’t have any topics, they will try to do their best for talking each other.

The First Thanksgiving (Zhen Fan* vivian *:D )

Love is strength, love is magic, love is courage, love is wisdom, and love is the sign that guide us keep forward in the darkness. Sometimes, parents may misunderstand us; sometimes, parents may say something not so suitable in certain situations. That is all because, they are ordinary people. Parents might do something disappointing, because they are not on the right track communicating with us. Parents are trying to keep us away from harm every second. Although they have different point of views, everything they say or do to us is out of love. Every parent has affection for his or her children, and there is no expectation. As it was said in the article, “He is the cutest, the funniest, sweetest, smartest, best-behaved bay in the world.” We are the greatest things to parents. Sometimes, parents are strangers to us, somehow alien and remote. However, they will never leave us aside. Silence is never a sign of ignorance. We may gather together with family members without any word and do not even know what to talk about. Love is non-verbal. In whatever serious situations, home is always the place we can trust and rely on. Parents give us love, but never ask for. Our happiness smiles are the best things ever in their lives. Whatever has happened, love between parents and us will never ever vanished and been destroyed.

On My Road (Anthimos Michael)

The article on my road, tells a story about a person who goes on a bus trip to meet his friend at Texas. His friend usually broke into houses and after he was caught by the police, he moved to Texas. Living in Boston in 1964 and desperate to meet his friend, he bought a bus ticket for 100 dollars and he left Boston to meet his friend. After being on the bus traveling he was surprised to see how different the people were are, than the people he knew. The author living in the conveniences of the city, where the middle class and rich people live, was surprised see how poor people live and act. Usually poor and lower class people take the bus, and this unfamiliar behavior of these people was something new to the author. Although he studied in school many different races, for instance African Americans, the feeling of living with them and seeing them through his journey change his mind of what he thought about them. The media was presenting the African Americans often cartoonish and mean, which it turn out to be false. Only when you live someone you can tell his true behavior. Traveling through the cities of America he got to know America better and see the people from a different prospective.

Leave me Alone (Yuhui Li)

The writer invited her parents come her house to celebrate Thanksgiving but the writer worry about they wouldn't have enough to talk about because they have long time no see each other. They want to live alone. When they sightseeing the Ellis Island, they remember the immigrant experience.Their family all menber don't want to close to someone . The writer's father went away form their home when the writer was young. The writer also leave home and live in NY.Although they were running away, they have their new life and new goal in the new place.

In my opinion,I think they all want to alone because they want to make a new life. It's modern people's common habit.I like it,because we are all people, but someone is young and someone is old. They always can't understand each other. If someone feel your father and mother can't accept or understand your opinions, you will go away and find a new place to make a new life.People want to find somepeople who can talk and discuss whit them. They have same topic.

On My Road (Lingli Huang)

Actually I did not read the article, but through the other students' words, I got some ideas. Maybe my idea is not so connect with the real opinion of this article.
It seems that the writer went to visit his friend by bue. He did not see him at last, but this trip was still worthy. He knew more about the situation and knew more about America on that time, 1964.
Through the long trip, he connected with many people, and went through many places. I believe many things in this tip were totally new for him. By communicated with the others, he learned many new things and also he can know more about himself, the feedback from the others. It was a noce resule.
On this time, based on the understanding of this article when I did not read it. I feel I want to travel now. I hope it will help me understand USA and even myself.

My first blog post-----(Zhou Chao)

This is yy first blog post,my mother gave me named Zhou Chao, you can call me Addison. The first Thanksgiving Sarah Vowel

These article talk about the feelings and the meaning of Sarah Vowel.she and her family have a lot of problems in the way they interact with each other.
firstly sarah dream is to have a normal family and to visit her parents and controversary.so she invited them in new york but the thigs was that she never expected that their response will be yes.since this yes she feels depressed, terrified and have only negative thoughts.one issue that exists in her family is the comunation problem they dont talk with each other because they dont want to be closed.for instance in place to talk they prefer to see movies or she sends her family to stay in a hotels during the days that they are staying in new york.sarah thought for thanksgiving was for people who choose to live apart from their family and to have a different life from them.so its not just the progress that society usually make but it is also that people want to live the life in a good place.another clue thing is that her family never stays together ,each of them goes in his owen way.the only thing that units them is that they are claustrophobes and prefer to be alone.only in these thing they understand and love each other.in the end they want to go in a place together but all them have feelings like being home, they dont want to be there and also with each other.
To sum up these kind of families are selfish and i dont like them.

The First Thanksgiving (Hoang Dinh)

There are a few “first time” in life so important that you could never forget. The first time you visit a city, first time seeing your parents who you haven’t seen for so long or like Sarah Vowell’s first Thanksgiving. Though different from what the title sounds like, it is still one memorable holiday which she has never expected, being a host to invite her family and relatives to gather at her house in New York City for the very first time, to celebrate Thanksgiving with her. She sent out the invitation and didn’t think that they would come, but the unexpected happened. Throughout the story, I found it was odd that even though they are a family, they couldn’t think of anything to talk. They used to go to the movie so that they don’t have to make a proper conversation and everyone in the family found their own things to do on Thanksgiving, leaving Sarah behind with all the cooking which to her, is harder than to die. In the end, they gathered in the Empire State Building, enjoying a view of the city that never sleep. All of a sudden she thought, “My sister wishes she were home. My mom and dad wish they were home. I wish they were home too.” It’s not that she hated them, otherwise she wouldn’t sent the invitation in the first place. She just felt awkward that they don’t have anything to share and talk like every other family. But in general, no matter how old you are or whatever you do, home is always a place that you can count on. That’s what I believe in.

The first Thanksgiving ( Li Li)

The article is about the author's first time to invite her parents to come to her house to celebrate the Thanksgiving. Her family is a little bit strange. She stayed with her family together, but they didn't know what to talk about. The author thinks all of them wants to go back home and she wanted them to go back home too.
I think the author's family is strange. During the holidays, my family usually get together. We play together, we eat together also we rest together. That is the family. The family members are the people who are the closest to you. They are the one who never hurts you and always be with you. So I think we should be open to our family. Discuss with them when you are not sure.
"I've always had these fantasies about being in a normal family in which the parents come to town and their adult daughter spends their entire visit daydreaming of suicide."

The First Thanksgiving (Sunkyung Yoo)

The First Thanksgiving

This story is not for normal American family. There is one family who do not what to talk to each other and try to stay away from each other. However, one day, the woman invites their parents who never visit her, but in this time they come to New York. She lets her parents stay in hotel. It is strange for me because I think it is very rude for parents and family. Maybe, hotel is more comfortable for old people, but it is not good thing to do in holiday. In holiday, people usually meet their family and relative even though they do not have enough space to stay.
In this story, she keeps talking about bad things, such as suicide and dead. Her family has problems. They do not know how to love their family and how to conversation each other. The worst thing is they do not want to communicate. She might also have problem of herself. In my opinion, they should try to connect with each other and share their thinking.
